I wonder if we can have a discussion on why, in my opinion, we have more memory loss issues than ever. I don't recall any of this in my parents' days and their siblings. My grandparents, don't know. My one big theory is that today and for the last 20-30 yrs, statins for lower cholesterol have been the big push. And with so many lowering cholesterol, their brains are drying out. Our brains need cholesterol. Some will say all the processed foods today, more than ever, I guess that's a truth. Just talked to a friend today and she is telling me 3 people in her life are showing signs of dementia. I didn't ask her, but I'd bet all 3 are taking statins. I'm not a fan of pharma drugs and as I've posted here enough already I have been taking nutritional supplements for over 25 yrs. And, of course, smoking helps nothing but tobacco industry. Dementia seems to be be accelerated by statins, but I haven't seen studies showing that it actually causes it. Alzheimer's is only one of the dementias, but many people think the terms are synonymous. Alzheimer's is caused by the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain, a form of amyloidosis.
I'm thinking it might relate to the reason we have more autism than we used to. Not the same drugs, necessarily, but it probably has to do with something that medical science has given us to solve one problem, but which creates another. I agree with both of you that the widespread use of statin drugs might have something to do with it too. My last doctor said that he would recommend statin drugs to anyone over the age of forty, and I don't know very many people my age who aren't taking statin drugs, or who haven't had a doctor prescribe statin drugs. I wouldn't discount the idea of processed foods or insecticides of the sort that Monsanto has given us having a play in it, too. In other words, I don't know, but we're doing something wrong.
We'll never know as just like cancers there are so many but for both sugars are the enemy. And of course it depends on who is doing the tests, who is getting paid "off". Diseases are big businesses. Wellness, not so much. I just talked to my friend again about Coconut Oil and her 3 friends and do they take statins...and she said she knows 2 for sure, but not sure on the other. She herself admitted to taking a statin 3 days a week, and her doctor is asking WHY just 3 days?????? There are a variety of supplements that can address one if they think their cholesterol is a problem. I don't believe it's an issue, but that is why I've come to after years of reading about the Myth of it all. Pharma has sure trained the doctors very very well.

I have also read about MCT oil, or even coconut oil, helping with brain function and healing. Once the brain is very damaged, it may or may not be possible to heal and rejuvenate it; however, I am totally in favor of doing everything that we can to keep our brain active and healthy in the first place. I have found that a cup of Bulletproof Coffee in the morning gives me amazing mental focus, and enough energy to go to the fitness center and swim for almost a mile each day. I have only been using regular coffee and plain coconut oil, but I did buy a cube of grass fed butter to put in the coffee. Since I only use a small spoonful each morning, it lasts a long time. Basically, our body is either in the process of digesting food, or is done with digestion, and is using the energy to rebuild our body, which mostly happens when we sleep at night. If I'm going to put all that good stuff in my morning coffee I use only organic coffee. Have been for years. I use organics as much as I can and often they are not more pricey than reg stuff with pesticides...I've come to a place that there is so much I don't need and spend my money on what goes into my body.
I don't know anything about Bulletproof Coffee, but I take that idea and extend it to a couple of pots of coffee in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Oh, and I skip the swimming part. On topic, however, like with many other diseases or disorders, it's hard to know what to think. While being well aware that the medical industry doesn't necessarily have my best interests at heart, outside of the established industries, there are no dependable standards. Someone could create a few websites promoting the idea that eating pig excrement twice a day would prevent Alzheimer's. All we have to go by is who has the most professional looking websites. Yes, we can always look for other people corroborating whatever the health theory might be but it's not hard for a motivated person to create several websites supporting one another.
So reading your comment, am I correct that you consume a couple pots of coffee daily? Reminds me of a person I know from our bridge crowd who is in her 80's and drinks coffee all day and smokes cigs and complains that she doesn't sleep. ummmm wonder why...
Not every day. Sometimes I'll go entire days without any, and every now and then I have tea instead. I have no trouble sleeping, however.
I don't know what's good or bad things to do or not do for this terrible disease. Hoping it by passes me although my memory, some would say, is suspect.

None of us have any guarantees about our health, mind or body; but just like automobile maintenance usually prolongs the mechanical life of our vehicle, so does taking care of our health help to protect our body. At this point in my life, probably the most important goal that I have IS to take care of my health as best as I can, in the hopes that whatever years remain to me, will be useful ones. Obviously, not everyone has the same hopes and goals in life; so for some people, simply enjoying now and not being concerned about how we will feel tomorrow, or what we will still be able to do, seems like a lot more reasonable way to live than the way that you and I (and some of the rest of us here in this forum) have chosen to live our life. In my world, it doesn’t make sense to waste the evening watching television mindlessly, when I can be reading and learning something that might improve my life, or at least inspire me to do better. The books that I have read about the use of coconut oil indicate that it is of great value, both to help us think clearer and to give us energy. When I read something, then I become my “guinea pig” and experiment to see what effect (if any) the food or exercise (or whatever it is) has on me, and when I find that it helps me, then I keep on doing that. I used to have 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning, just to wake up my brain, and get my body somewhere close to being ready to go to the fitness center and swim, and some days, Bobby kind of dragged me out of the door, to be honest. Really soon after I started making my coffee with the spoon of coconut oil and spoon of butter, plus spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardomum), I noticed that my brain became clear and focused, I got done with morning chores and had my swimming suit packed and ready for the fitness center with a lot more ease.
In 2012 the FDA told doctor to get their patients off statin because they were linked to dementia and diabetes. Doctors controlled by big pharma ignored that. The brain by weight is 75% cholesterol and the myelin the part effected by Alzheimer is 100%. I just had in the last few years lost to people close to me one was 104 the other 102 both were as sharp mentally as anyone so here age means nothing for dementia. Both never seen the doctor. Large doses of vitamin E seems to help the memory of Alzheimer patients. I don't know of any cure but I do believe it is easily prevented
