UK PM Teresa May has fallen on her sword over the Brexit disaster and has announced she is stepping down from the leadership on June 7 after US President Donald Trump's UK visit..

Her announcement on Friday morning came after days of pressure on her to quit after angering MPs by attempting to bring back her withdrawal deal for a fourth Commons vote on Brexit.

May’s impending departure has triggered a race for the Conservative leadership, with the party pledging to install a new prime minister by the end of July. Former London Mayor and Foreign Minister Boris Johnson is favored to replace May.

Yes, she has caused a lot of turmoil and feel we can relax a little now, till the next round, and the next
Its awful to see a PM go this way but she must have seen it coming

Yes I watched it live... you'd have to have a heart of steel not to feel for her!!....however, she just wasn't fit for the job, and she refused to accept it, until ultimately her whole cabinet were resigning one by one.

The problem now is, that we just don't have anyone strong enough to replace her as leader.... so it's anyone's guess who is going to become PM... Whoever it is tho' better deal with the brexit process in the way the majority of people of this country voted for, otherwise they'll be meeting the same fate as May.. and what a a laughing stock & farce this country will become!!

I doubt anyone here from the U.S. understands the process now, and it shows clearly how the British system differs from the U.S. system. Can someone from the UK explain the next steps?

We really don't know ourselves because the damn govt doesn't know themselves , so we're really kept in the dark far too much, which is some ways is why brexit happened, because many people weren't fully informed of what Brexit actually would fully involve!!

however what we know up to now.. or at least what we've been informed is that, May steps down on the 7th of June as party leader but not as Prime minister, and will continue to govern until a replacement is found ...The process will begin on 10th of june and the new leader installed by Mid -July... The new leader will be chosen from May's own party the Conservatives, and if as is expected the leader is a Brexiteer, aka Boris Johnson, Foreign secretary Jermey Hunt, or Dominic Raab.. they will continue to negotiate hard for new term before October 31 st..leave with or without a deal..or in fact remain......who knows!!

Well if you as Brits dont know what is going on.. fat chance the rest of the world knowing either. Is it fair to say that Brexit is a shambles and that the UK is now seen as a laughing stock by everyone else?

Why would the UK be seen as a laughing stock? It's not like every other country isn't having their own governmental absurdities to deal with.

@Beth Gallagher - I think we are seen that way and rightly so, although its been agony for us
But - as you say, those countries that revel in laughter would not have to look far for more laughs :p

@Patsy Faye I agree; Washington is loaded with jokes and most of them were elected. :D

    @Beth Gallagher - yes - just one country amongst many ……. :p
I hear such common sense amongst the ordinary Joes - makes you wonder about the privileged few getting elected
to do a sub standard job of running the country o_O

Surely , this is not coming as a surprise, is it ? I remember reading (maybe late last fall or winter) that she was going to step down, and it would be in the spring or early summer. It has been a while since I read it, and now I don’t know where to go back and find it (assuming that it is still there somehow), and see exactly what it said.

No surprise at all - but due to the Brexit delays in her hands, we did wonder how long a delay we faced this time on her resignation
Now hopefully, things will get moving (hopefully)
