Tommy Dorsey's brother was Jimmy, not Johnny.

No I don't like jazz at all. But is that Dave Brubeck in the middle picture?

Yes it is and the guy on the Sax is Gerry Mulligan and the first Sax player is Stan Getz. Remember the Girl from Ipanema song?

Stan Getz played Tenor Sax...Gerry Mulligan played Baritone Sax, which is an unusual solo instrument.

After "Girl from Ipanema" became a huge success, Stan Getz said "That tune will send my daughter to college."

Pianist Dave Brubeck was the leader of his quartet, but it was his alto sax player Paul Desmond that gave the "sound" to his group.

After a concert, musically naive college girls would come up to Desmond and say "That was wonderful, Mr. Brubeck!"

    Lon...lets have more Jazz discussions!

I can discuss Dixieland, Swing, Bebop, and Modern.

(Of course you've heard of the Bebop giants Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk?)

I think the only jazz song I ever remember is "Take Five."

Jazz vocalist Billie Holiday was arrested on her death bed for a past narcotics possession.
She was a top vocalist right up there with Ella Fitzgerald.

Beth, that song was a showcase for alto sax player Paul Desmond, with Brubeck as accompanist.

An unusual feature of that tune was its time signature. It was done in the completely strange tempo of 5/4!

Count it yourself: 5 beats per measure! Totally different from the usual 4/4 time!
