I'm a fan of this man, not just for his acting ability but also his 'voice' We were just reminiscing on his films and we spoke of the one 'Moby Dick' and how did they manage to conceal his leg well he was one legged in it wasn't he ….. Any ideas how they achieved this ?
@Patsy Faye No, but they did a similarly amazing job on Gary Sinise in "Forrest Gump". Regarding Moby Dick, I will never forget the ending scene in which Captain Ahab is ensnarled by the harpoon's rope wound about the whale's body, lashing the dead captain to it, and his free arm waves slowly, as the whale's body rolls. One of the observing crew remarked, "Look, even in death he beckons us!" Frank

According to my search, Moby Dick was filmed in 1955-56, so no computer special effects. Here's some info I found: One of the older techniques for hiding missing limbs was to strap the actor’s calf to his thigh, and let him wear looser (but not baggy) pants. His legs would just be able to fit inside the pant leg, and it would seem as if he was missing the bottom half of his leg. Sometimes the "hole" technique was used... what they actually do is to create a hole where the character’s leg can go through (around knee-level). Then a bandage is used to hide that insertion point, so that it looks like the character has well and truly lost his leg.

(few hours later) I've pondered - and I think Beth has the right explanation, although I'm sure I saw his leg in plain view but that was a long time ago - now, I want to see the film again but old movies are rarely shown Anyhoo - thanks I was more frightened of Ahab than that whale
I read that Moby Dick was not a box office success, mostly because people didn't accept Gregory as a "bad guy."
That's a shame - I recall the film being so well executed I managed to find a copy of it on You Tube, will watch the week-end ...….and closely @Beth Gallagher
@Patsy Faye , be sure to watch closely and tell us if you figure out how that was done. I await your answer with bated breath. @Hal Pollner , Gregory Peck's performance in "To Kill a Mockingbird" was one of the best performances I have ever seen. He brought Atticus Finch to life.
