I got a call from a friend stationed on the Navy base yesterday, so I knew it was coming. I am in neither zone. These are coastal zones on the east side of the St Johns River. I live on the west side. My oldest son in St. Augustine was part of the evac and decided to take his family to my parents a couple of days. They are right on the ocean and if the road (A1A) gets washed out like a couple of years ago, they would be stranded for awhile. I feel good about where we are. Chances are there will be electric, water and (arrgg) internet outages Wed & Thurs, but we are ready to stick it out. I have my frozen coffee in the freezer...... I have a garbage bag of ice ready for in the fridge. Bathtub all clean and ready to fill for toilette water and hands. It's the price we pay to wear shorts thru the Christmas season.
Not at all. I actually tend to be quite self serving. Some people are born with a loving nature, I have to pray and ask God daily to help me not go thru life being an a$$.
@Bess Barber Do you lose water supply if power goes out? Or does it go away after a reasonable time, or remain available? How hot is the air temp. during, or after one of these storms? How much effect on folks from loss of A/C? These are things I've often thought about. What is the longest time that power may be out? Long enough to cause your fridge to warm up to spoilage temp? Ours was out a full week in Missouri, and after the 3rd. day, fridge getting close to 50+`, I went out and bought a 4000 watt generator. Do folks use them in your area? Frank
Yes, lots of people have generators and lots don't. Hurricane Irma, 2 years ago, took this same path and there were areas without water and power for over 2 weeks. We weren't one of those. Ours was only a day/ Internet out 4 days. It depends on if a limb or tree hit a power line or if there was equipment damage from tornado or lightning. Or how widespread the outage is. Jacksonville is a very large city. It gets dreadfully hot and humid. Our general temperature this year is 80 - 95 degrees. How bad it can get indoors depends on if a person has plenty of shade and a well insulated house. Usually, it just feels hotter because you are BORED with no TV or internet. Of course, you can charge your phone in the car and carry on with a WIFI hotspot connection. When you know a hurricane is a possibility, people rarely stock up on meat or too many fridge items. Only people with deep freezers have issues.
When Irma was in full swing a couple of years ago, I rolled in a blanket on the floor of my laundry room and cried for my mom.
Right now, it doesn't look so bad for my area. I'm about midway of NC and it looks like it will brush our coast. But they are saying that just the slightest turn could make it a lot worse here. We have a generator so we should be OK.
Looks like it may weaken significantly even before it goes by our area. The eastern coasts were in grave danger if it was going to remain a CAT 5. No matter what though, it's still a serious storm and I'm glad to hear you are prepared!!
I see the "Jim Cantore on the Seawall" coverage has started. Gotta build that drama-factor on the weather channel. Hopefully a big wave will roll him over; now that would be entertaining.
@Beth Gallagher Cantore maintains a "rough & tumble" image, was " into" body building, sort of competing with the other main announcer, Black guy, I can't think of his name now. In a taped interview for some magazine, Cantore used the "f" word a number of times, which surprised me. Frank
He looks so much like my first husband, my kid's dad, until I used to get nauseated every time I saw him. Now, without cable, I can avoid him all together.
Hopefully 'The Big D' as the hurricane is being called in our area, will pass on by through tomorrow. I just want it all over with.
