Buying Florida, The Louisiana Purchase, and the purchase of Alaska have all worked out well. What do you think about buying Greenland now ?
Somehow, I just can’t get my brain wrapped around the buying and selling of people. A country is much more than just a land mass, it’s the people who live on that land mass that make it a country. If the overwhelming majority of those who live and work there (the citizens) are comfortable with becoming part of the U.S. and living under our Constitution, then it might be something to consider. There are indeed a few positive aspects about the project but until the people can accept such a move I have many doubts about a good outcome.
Greenland is not a member country as recognized by the United Nations. Greenland is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Maybe they are renters?
What is Greenland and who owns Greenland? "Greenland is the world’s largest island, with Australia and Antarctica typically considered continental landmasses rather than islands. Despite its name, Greenland isn’t very green at all. The majority of Greenland is covered in ice, including the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. This harsh environment makes Greenland one of the least densely populated places in the world."
#1 You can't buy what is not for sale. #2 We don't seem to be able to handle what we have. #3 the other purchases you refer to are of another age. The age of expansion and imperialism is long over. #4 ask the residents of our other territories and possessions how they are treated by their masters. Ask the Puerto Ricans and the Virgin Islanders how helpful their master is in ensuring their quality and stability of life. #5 Why the hell do we need it? What would we do with it ? #6 Why would YOU want to buy it?
Dunno but it’s worth some research if only to build ones stockpile of information. To me, it’s kind of like Alaska. One day the people wake up and boom, the natives find out that they are Russians and under Russian authority and then shortly thereafter they wake up and boom, they’re now a part of the U.S. I guess I’ll just have to study the situation a while longer in order to come up with a more informed opinion.
@Sheldon Scott There is another thread on this subject somewhere on here. People brought up several good reasons why it would be a beneficial purchase, including defense and scientific. I think there are 50,000 people or so who live there. They may or may not be cool with the idea, but there would be benefits for them as well, as opposed to some other countries who may also be interested. I suppose they don't have too many resources and could use the trade benefits.
Denmark Might Not Sell Greenland to America, but It Is Selling Its Resources to China (LINK) "If China was given a possibility to control the ports and airports in Greenland, it would cause serious problems for NATO operations in the northern European theater. The Greenland – Iceland- UK (GIUK) gap has long been the focus point of naval planning for the possible showdown between NATO and Russia in Europe." "Buying Greenland as a whole is off the table, but China is raiding the all-you-can-eat buffet there."
China having military access to a land mass that close to us may not be a good thing. The problem with finding out how the Icelanders really feel is due to all the slants, swings and spins from the media sources. The media doesn't seem to have the concept of reporting, they are all would-be editors looking at ways to promote their own opinion or agenda. It's so annoying. I'm quite sure the USA wouldn't force them to do anything they didn't want to do, even with their being only 50,000 or so of them.
