Going to the library this morning hoping to find something good to read. That's harder than it used to be because I only read large print from the library and our library has a limited number of large print books. I still have a couple on kundle I haven't finished but I need a few books in hand to read.
Thank goodness for kindles' so you can enlarge the print, but you must be changing the page every few seconds... Dunno what to suggest Bill, not knowing your literary preference
I don’t even try to read a printed book anymore, simply because the print is so hard to read, for me now. I belong to bookbub.com and also bookgorilla.com, and Kindle Unlimited, so there is never a problem finding books of any kind to read. Except for kindle unlimited , the others don’t cost anything, and always have a good choice of free or very cheap book bargains. You might also try the Overdrive app, @Bill Boggs . It is an online access to your local library, and you can check out ebooks from the library and read them on your kindle, or the iPad kindle app.
Interesting, @Yvonne Smith , I hadn't heard of the former 2 ..I must have a look at those. I prefer a hardback book now that I only read at bedtime, ( I fall asleep nowadays if I read books during the day) I like to prop it up on the cushion and just sit back and read...although just recently I have been using my kindle more, simply because I got cheaper book on download., but otherwise I tend to use my kindle only for trips, or if I'm expecting to be waiting for a long time for an appointment...
I actually use a variety of devices to read. I have always liked reading books, but the last times that I tried it, the print was just so small it was hard on my eyes, plus if it is a large book (Hawaii, by Michener), then it is also heavy to hold. I gave that copy to Robin, and ended up buying the ebook to read instead. I have the small 7” Kindle, and it is easy to fit into my purse when going somewhere, and then I got an 8” Kindle just for reading at home, because I like the little bit larger size. If I am reading something with pictures or diagrams, then I use my full-size iPad with the Kindle app, because I can see the diagrams better that way. I just got one of the 10.5” iPad Pro’s and it is really lightweight, and great for reading when I need to see pictures or diagrams, and it doesn’t really weight much more than my Kindle does. Since I rarely watch TV or movies, and usually read at night, I spend the extra $10 for Kindle Unlimited, and it is worth it to me.
I also have the 10'' Ipad Pro... ... most of my hardback book are Tomes.. 500 plus pages.. . I'm dreading the time when I'm no longer able to hold them..
Just because something isn't available in your particular library branch, they can also order books for you from other branches. If you speak to your librarian, he/she would probably be more than happy to help you. You can also find a list of books online that would interest you and supply that list to your librarian and they will see if they can find those books. My daughter in law is a librarian. This is why I know all about the great services they offer. It's these types of requests from the community which proves why they are a much needed asset to our society.
Bill--you may already know this, but the Kindle app is available for your Windows laptop or computer. Using that would allow you enlarge the font without having to turn pages so frequently.
Thanks, Beth. Yes, I am using the Kindle app. It's the library where large prints are limited. That's where i get all my westerns, but generally always try to find other genres at thje library first. I have over a hundred books downloaded on my iPad.
@Charlene Marolf, No I have not read the Green Mile. I have read none of Steven King's books. I did see a TV production of one King's books, maybe a short story. I think the name of it was " Pretty Things", or "Nice Things". It was a very good story. And in all my put togethers and time, I have read only one space book. That was Farmer In the Sky, and I don't remember who wrote it. If I live to be eighty, I don't intend to read another space book. Also Steven King is not on my radar, but I am appreciative for the the suggestion. I hope my reply is not offensive to you. It is that I am blind in one eye and reading is not as easily done as one upon a time so I have set some priorities. Yet I do appreciate your suggestion.
@Yvonne Smith, Thanks. I have the overdrive app, have used it a couple of times but find it onerous. My wife does not do computers. She used to. bur her eyesight is not good. Fact is she is going blind with an eye disease. She reads large print with a magnifying glass, a special one her medical people have supplied. Finding her something is the problem, although I do try to find most books at the library other than western or western romance, which I often enjoy. And I often try to find short stuff or sosmething easily read that might help her go to sleep, something along the lines of meditation, mindfulness, some out of the norm that suits her. When I say I am book shopping or looking for a book, that is sometime misleading because I mostly have my wife in mind, and for that I apologize. I'll try to do better or be more specific..
@Bill Boggs , you should read "The Green Mile". It's one of the best books I ever read. It's totally different from Stephen King's usual books. You can probably get it on your Kindle app.
@Shirley Martin, You think so, huh? If I can work in in with Ken Burn's "History of Country Music" starting Sunday Night on PBS, I very well may attempt reading the Green Mile.
