Remembrance Sunday in the UK is on the 10th of November this year, when flowers and parades are carried out to celebrate all those who fought, lived and died fighting in all the wars for our freedom. here in the Uk we all wear poppies in our lapels in the weeks leading up to remembrance day... is that the same in Canada?
OH...so THAT is what the poppies are for. When I would see them on people in music videos or interviews, I always thought it was for cancer awareness or something. It's a really nice gesture. Some people here wear flag pins or fly a flag in the yard, but most people don't seem to think about it much. It's really sort of sad how much we take for granted.
yes it's the 11th here technically, but we celebrate the Remembrance parades and commemorative church services on the Sunday closest to the 11th which this years is the 10th...
Yes, Canada recognizes on the Nov 11 Day. In larger populated areas, there is more offered in memory of. Here in my town, along with many smaller towns, there are just a handful of veterans, sharing their memory. Always a service as well, films, etc. Now it seems the only ones who attend are family members, which would be my generation age, the younger ones following us, are almost non- attending, maybe they can't connect with the dedication, or can't be bothered...either one is sad. We've had many recent wars other than WW1 and WW2, but those soldiers don't seem to get the recognition they so deserve as well. Sad. All countries, with our men and women who served, no matter how they served, and what they did, deserve respect and recognition. Would be a great plus if our following generations would help the respect going.
That is sad indeed Micki. So many of our college and high school students are quite disrespectful of our traditions of honoring all our veterans of all wars. They treat patriotism as though it is nothing but pithy propaganda, but, if they'd ever bother to learn of how so many nations suffered under the invasions of the Nazis and Japanese during the WW wars and really see what life was like in the Soviet regime, they'd have their eyes opened. But, they consider learning such things traumatizing. Imagine!
