...to a Brit, what this is all about? In plain and simple text , can someone please explain why he's facing a potential 50 years sentence... I know what i read, but I don't understand , so please tell me like I'm 15 years old.. if you can... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7690103/Roger-Stone-GUILTY-lying-Congress-WikiLeaks.html
He is guilty of being a contributor and a vocal supporter of the Trump campaign in 2016. Like Mike Flynn, they began investigating him along with others who were believed to be close to Trump. He was charged and convicted for making false statements to Congress and witness tampering. However, he wouldn't have even been in front of Congress if they weren't investigating everyone having anything to do with Trump. Did he lie to Congress? I don't know, but everyone in Congress lies to us all the time so I'd have a hard time getting excited about that. I know that's not the detail you were looking for, but it's all I have.
I read he donated money to the Richard Nixon campaign back in around 1970 ... but I'm genuinely not understanding why this man is facing 50 years prison. I don't know him nor have ever heard of him until this week. I've looked on lots of political forums to try and get answers and aside from everyone calling for his head..or conversely calling for Clinton's instead.. no-one is actually laying out exactly why he's guilty of a crime that carries such a high sentence .
Other than politics, I don't think there is any sense in it. It was a purely political prosecution. Hillary lied to Congress, and to the FBI, about things that directly related to herself, yet no one will even investigate her, and she'll never be prosecuted.
Although I wouldn't have his face tattoed on my back, there was actually a lot to be admired about Richard Nixon. His crime was being loyal to his staff. I won't go into detail here because that would be another topic.
I'm just absolutely stunned that it looks like Hilary Clinton will never be prosecuted.. it's just beyond belief. !! I wonder why she's teflon coated... is it because she's an Alien? ..I'm only half joking here...
We rarely prosecute Democrats. That seems to be an unwritten law that is respected by Democrats and Republicans alike.
When Democrats have the power to do so, they protect their own. At times, the pressure is so great that they cannot do so, as was the case with Jeffrey Epstein and, at other times, they might throw one of their own to the wolves when their usefulness has run its course. But, for the most part, Democrats will protect one another when they have the power to do so and are usually able to do so anyhow, with the help of fellow travelers in the Republican Party. When Republicans have the majority, it seems that they are uncomfortable with it, and bend over backward giving in to the other side. Thus, when the first hint of trouble comes upon a Republican, prominent or not, there will always be a significant number of Republicans who will try to beat the Democrats to the news cameras in order to denounce their fellow Republican. They have certainly tried to do so with Trump, but he has a way of turning things on them, and many of the Republicans who denounced him did not win reelection, while many others opted to retire when polls indicated that they were being threatened even in their own primaries. Unfortunately, some of them then took the safer route of turning on his strongest supporters. When Republicans have the majority, they willingly attack their own, but they are hesitant to go after Democrats. It seems as if they can't believe they have a majority, aren't comfortable with it, and opt to appease rather than advance a Republican agenda. Then there are those in the progressive wing of the GOP, like Mitt Romney, whose agendas are more in line with the Democrats anyhow.
His trial was held in Washington, DC. The jury pool was chosen from a city that voted 90.5% for Hillary Clinton. The chances were very high that there wasn't one person on the jury who voted for Trump.
