My Country Western favorites were Charlie Fox, Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold.

 

You're the same age as my mum would have been now Lois...and my mums' favourite country singer was Jim Reeves, I was about 9 years old when he died, and I remember her in tears when she heard he'd died.

 

Yes, Holly, it was a tragedy when he crashed in that plane.

 

of course, but young as I was at the time, I had never known anyone cry for someone they didn't know or had never met, and I was totally bewildered.

However, even all these years on, I still like to listen to the occasional JR song, and my mother is never far from my memory...

Don't know if this can go in this thread or not, but last night we watched the movie, Patsy & Lorretta. Really had no idea that Patsy Cline and Lorretta Lynn were such good friends up until Patsy died in the plane crash. Very, very good movie.

 

Yes this is precisely the thread pertaining to anything Country , Cody.. and I agree that movie was very good....

 

Country-Western ballads?

There are only two, by Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers:

"COOL WATER" and

"TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS"

All the others are merely C&W songs, but I especially like "Pancho and Lefty" with Merle & Willie, also, most Marty Robbins songs, like "Big Iron" and "El Paso".

Wife likes Alan Jackson, a good choice!

Never heard of this movie but do want to see this.

 

We have been watching this series which covers Country music stars from the beginning to the
present day. Episode 3 onwards was best for me as I knew of those that became 'stars'.
June Carter - Lorretta Lynn - Tammy Wynette - Dolly Parton …
Hank Williams - Johnny Cash - Charlie Pride - Hank Williams junior, who escaped his Mother's
clutches (as manager) and did well on his own - and many more
We have two more episodes to view and its been an entertaining, informative series
Hank Williams Jr had a terrible accident and his face had to be rebuilt, he talked about that.

We watched all of them a month or so ago. Very interesting, but we were more interested in George Strait, Garth Brooks and others from that era.

I got into country music around the mid 80's. Have quite a bit of country music cd's from that time, up to the early 2000.

 

I listened to country music a lot in the sixties with the likes of Buck Owens and "Country" Charlie Pride as he was called. Back then they were all distinct from each other and originals, but today it seems like they try to copy off each other and sound too similar.

 

This is true, there were unique artists back then in all genres of music - hard to find uniqueness today
