Tom is barely tall enough to reach into the top drawer of his dresser, where his socks are kept. He isn't tall enough to see into it. He knows that he has 11 pairs of black socks and 6 pairs of brown socks in the drawer with no pairs joined together. How many socks would he have to pull out of the drawer in order to get a matching pair?
It's possible that a pair could be retrieved with two tries but it's also possible that he would get one of each color.
If we are talking about how many “tries” would he have to make to have a pair, it would be a maximum of 3. On the other side of the coin, the question asked how many socks would he have to get to make a pair, which is 2 since 2 makes a pair.
Yeah, three is the answer. While he may have gotten a pair in two tries, he is guaranteed to have it in three.
