I have handled lead all my life by way of sinkers and jigs used for fishing. Mercury has gotten a bad reputation too. It used to just be an oddity being a liquid metal. I remember rubbing it on a penny to make it shine. When we spilled the mercury on the floor it would form little balls of itself and we would chase it down to pick up.
