When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it makes vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur. Vitamin D has many roles in the body and is essential for optimal health.
Could the vitamin D shortage be cause by the cholesterol phobia pushed by doctors???

Okay, can someone sell me on the grape seed? I bought a bottle of it, containing 90 capsules, and I haven't decided whether to continue with it or not. The bottle talks about free radical protection, promoting a healthy immune system, cardiovascular health, and so on, but does it really do any of that stuff? That's the problem with food supplements, that there are only two sides to it. One side is promoting food supplements because they want me to buy the stuff, and they want to be able to sell it without having to demonstrate that it actually does what they say it does, and the other side would rather I get sick and take their pharmaceuticals instead.

Personal experience doesn't really help because if I take all of these supplements and don't get sick, how am I supposed to know that I wouldn't have gotten sick even if I hadn't taken the supplements? On the other hand, if I take them and I get sick, one side will simply say that they can't cure everything, while the other side will gloat because they told me not to take this crazy stuff.

It's different than vitamins because there is a published standard as to how much of each vitamin we're supposed to have so if, for some reason, we can't get what we need through our diet, or through sunlight, or another natural means, then it makes sense to take a vitamin supplement. Other than the people selling grape seed capsules, there is nothing that I can look at to see how much grape seed I should have each day. Even the grape seed sellers seem more concerned with my not exceeding the recommended dose. So I suppose I can overdose on grape seed. Should I be picking seeds out of my grapes so that I don't die of an overdose?

The problem Ken is that there is a lot of supplements being promoted that claim to do the same thing as Grape Seed---TUMERIC & Alpha Lopic Acid for example.

True, that further exacerbates the potential problem.

Yes Ken I go along with the same thyme. I know my body needs certain minerals, vitamins, and omega acids. Also a good digestion system to absorb them. When it comes to supplements like grape seeds and others I would treat them like medicine if you need a particular fix than you would look for that supplement. There is a ton of them out there but some like grape seed has 19,333 research papers on it pub med. Also some have a lot of research done on them like fucoidan 2,882 anti-cancer ability pub med. So if you have any questions on any supplement you can go to pub med [NCBI] US National Library of MedicineNational Institutes of Health

A proper diet should negate having to take any supplements unless your body fails to absorb the vitamins it needs and then shows up in blood work. Spend your money on good and proper food instead of supplements.

Wasn't [name deleted] the one who was pushing the grape seed. I thought she was a little bit nuts. :D

I do take a multi vitamin, vit. C, and vit. D. That's it. I just eat the foods otherwise. I love grapes, so it wouldn't occur to me to buy grape seed. Nor many of the other stuff either. I love fish and look for Omega rich fish to eat.

Although she hasn't been here in months, I deleted the name. I don't necessarily disagree, but I don't think she was the only one mentioning it.

Well, Ken, I was prodding her. :D If she saw that, she might come back to defend her good name. But I still think she was a little bit nuts. ;)

I take the fish oil stuff because my cholesterol borders on being high sometimes, and I don't want to take statin drugs. Plus, it's not particularly expensive and it doesn't taste like anything.

I tried the grape seed - saw no benefit at all
I think if you have a 'condition' then look for something that can help with that. I have to take Alpha Lipoic Acid and
I can see that it helps. The same with the cherry supplement at night.

I always keep 6 eight oz. Protein Shakes in the fridge for an occasional meal replacement. I don't do it to loose weight just to ensure sufficient vitamins.

I hate to disillusion you, @Lon Tanner ; but keeping 6 protein shakes in your fridge is not going to ensure sufficient vitamins. You will need to take them out of the fridge and drink one every now and then to get any benefits from the protein shakes.

I am not disillusioned at all Yvonne. I eat very well balanced meals and I am sure I get the proper vitamin Intake that way but I enjoy the shakes and have one in lieu of a dish of ice cream.
