    "Mate" is fine. I'm not certain we have an equivalent, now that you ask.

    Maybe "buddy" or "bud." Decades ago some people in some parts might have said "Bubba," as slang meaning little brother. Bubba is also a boy's name in some deep south parts.

    Some people say "Bro" as in "brother," but that's not my generation.

    I find language to be fascinating, both internationally as well as regional colloquialisms.

    I still marvel at how humans could develop so many dissimilar yet complex ways of communication.

    Years ago I worked for a Japanese company...about 70% of my coworkers were Japanese nationals. Those poor people would travel across this nation to all of its varied regions with their dialects and accents (some of which I have a hard time with), and return home with their heads spinning.

    ps: "Bud" is fine, mate!
