Injured wrist while assembling rowing machine. Have not had a chance to try it out as yet..must wait until I'm healed. nuts... Hal
Yesterday I mounted my new inclined rowing machine and did 3 full-stroke reps. This morning my right-side upper back and shoulder muscles were sore as hell! Why the right side only? Hal
My guess if you're right-handed it's the strongest and did most of the work or it's the weakest and worked harder than your left.
Both sides will probably hurt eventually. Way back in my running days, I read about overuse injuries caused by working the same muscle the same way over and over. A rowing machine has you locked into one movement . I would recommend getting some dumbbells and do some curls, presses and bends etc. Walk around with them too for leg strength which is important as you get older. You can do pushups just by leaning against a kitchen counter and do them at 45 degrees. Make up your own exercises and mix it up. That's what I do in the basement in the winter.
At our age, gotta have the old Motrin/ibuprofen ready! Thinking about how cool it would be, for the exercise, until done. After not playing our Wii Game for awhile, we find that out very, very fast.
Von, I think you've got something there... My right arm is definitely the dominant one, and I was favoring my left hand due to arthritis, which means I was unknowingly pulling harder on the right-hand oar. I addition, I was showing off to a house guest, so I pulled the oars back to the limit 3 times, at the maximum incline setting. I should have worked into this new machine gradually! Hal
Yes, I do have a light barbell and dumbbells which I could use for curls to condition me for rowing on an incline. Thanks, Ed and Cody! H.P.
That's the way it was for me when I started hiking again this spring. After each hike, I'd be laid up for a couple of days. Eventually, the recovery time lessened, however.
Yeah, it’s hard to park one’s ego at the door isn’t it? No stretches, no light rows to loosen up but instead we say, dern the torpedos, full speed ahead and suffer the consequences tomorrow! Just a suggestion: If you have no sharp pain and it’s only an ache in the muscles, do some shoulder and trapezoid stretches then do a few light rows. It’ll warm up those muscles and allow an increase in the metabolites to do a quicker mend with those micro tears in the muscle fibers. Believe it or not, depending on the type of arthritis in that left elbow, light rows will even help relieve some pain and maybe eventually heal it up. If anything, it might help increase your use of it. I think there are a couple of YouTube videos that center on elbow arthritis pain therapy
Thanks for taking an interest in my problem, Bobby...I'll definitely heed your suggestions! (The arthritis is in my left HAND.) Hal
Sorry about missing the “hand” part but still, there are some hand exercises that can help but again, it depends on the type of arthritis you have as to how much it will help. Keep at it Hal. By the time you hit a hundred you want to be able to do more than just look.............if ya get my drift.
How's the rowing progressing, Hal? Have you moved beyond the "showing off for unsuspecting visitors" stage?
