That sounds good but it would be costly for me since I go to Monterey twice a month usually, going tomorrow in fact.

    That's a 300 mile round trip.

Also, it works for you because everything is very close in Fresno...if you live in the boonies somewhere it will cost a lot more.

I'm surprised though that you went all those places for only $100?

People can live without a car. That's my goal someday.

I had a 12:30 PM appointment with my Dermatologist to undergo a five minute radiation treatment to my forehead for a Squamous Cell Skin Cancer. None of my family or the Assisted Living Facility was able to take me so at 12 PM I called Uber on my I Phone and within 5 minutes Bruce shows up in his Toyota Camry, put me in the front seat and my Walker in the trunk. We got to my appointment at 12:20 PM and I finished up at the doctors at 12:50 PM and called Uber once again. Cheryl showed up this time at 1PM in a Toyota Prius and took me back home, arriving at 1:35 PM.I gave each driver a five star rating and then checked the charges for the trip. My first ride was $10.15 & the second $11.05 for a total of $21.0. I don't tip.
I will be getting the same radiation treatment this coming Thursday the 16th but will be taken to my appointment by the Limo Service provided as part of my rent.

I like Uber. We use Uber whenever we're in Washington DC.

Since giving up driving three years ago I have become a big fan of UBER and just discovered a new feature that they have that is great for me and that is the ROUND TRIP FEATURE for the price of one trip.
I used Uber to go to the drive by window at the pharmacy to pick up one of my prescriptions. My cost was $6.00. I am not always able to have some one pick up my rx when I need it and this is a super alternative.
As long as the stop is three minutes or less there is no additional charge.

    Very convenient.

    I've not used Uber yet.

I use both Uber and Lyft. For the money I save not having to buy oil, tires, upkeep and insurance....it's a SUPER deal.
@Lon Tanner I'm so glad you are happy with their service and it gives you a new sense of freedom at an affordable price.

This Labor Day weekend period has not been a good time to take Uber. I have used them in the past when Assisted Living or family transportation is not available. What was once a modest $ 9.00 trip was listed at $45.00. this past Tuesday. I took Lyft instead for $12.00. Both Uber and Lyft require passengers to wear masks as do the drivers. COVID-19 has impacted much of day to day activity.

One of my nephews was an Uber driver. It fit him well because he likes to meet people and go places he hasn't been before. Now he's a truck driver and travels across the country. He's loving it.

Sounds like a good fit for your nephew, Von. A few years ago my youngest son wanted to be a trucker so he attended a vocational course at the local community college and got his CDL. He was hired by a national company based in Utah right out of school and drove a "reefer" for C.R.England. He loved it at first but it was a lonely life for a young man, plus he was really treated with no respect. He would get a load to a company, tired after many miles, and have to sit for hours at loading docks waiting to be unloaded. Some places would not allow him inside to use the restroom or offer him a drink. Being a truck driver is hard and thankless work, often dangerous and usually for poor pay.

After a little over a year, he gave it up and decided to go to a heavy equipment school in Washington state. Today he's in his 30's and has a job he loves operating cranes and such. He was never cut out for a desk job.

    Amtrak...

I first took Amtrak in the early 1980s, when Amtrak still stopped at depots all along the way. Since I was in no hurry, I liked that. Although we rarely stopped long enough to get off the train and see or do anything, I enjoyed the depots and the sights along the way, which included those not seen along the highway as well as people's back yards and the bad parts of most the towns that the train went through. On that first trip, I was accompanied by my 11-year-old nephew, who had stayed a week with me in California. We left from the Fullerton, California depot, which wasn't far from where I lived in Buena Park, and rode to the Chicago depot, where my brother picked us up. We had a sleeper car, and the sleepers were larger then than they are now.

Then, I didn't touch an Amtrak until after 2000. My wife and I have taken Amtrak four or five times since she doesn't like to fly, and I took Amtrak to Pennsylvania, and back as far as Boston from Maryland when I helped a pastor friend move from PA to MD. My wife and I have booked sleeper cars, as well as business or coach, depending on how long we're going to be on and the time of day.

I loved my first trip on Amtrak, while my other trips were comfortable but not particularly notable. Still, they are better than flying and less stressful than driving, although I generally like driving too. Sleeper cars are pretty darned compact these days, and Michelle was angry with me because I told her I had dreamed that we were en route to Auschwitz once. Yeah, I know; Auschwitz jokes are generally unacceptable.

One huge exception to my general positive disposition toward Amtrak is Penn Station in New York, or Moynihan Train Hall, as they call it now. I shouldn't be surprised because I have never had a positive experience in New York City. If my wife would allow it, I would drive hundreds of miles out of the way to avoid NYC, and my preference is for no layovers or changing trains in NYC. In fact, I don't think I'll agree to any more train changes in NYC. We'll be going straight from Washington D.C. to Boston on the way back so that should be okay. I wouldn't want to live in Boston but I don't mind visiting, and the Amtrak people in Boston aren't asshats like the ones in New York.

In conclusion, I like Amtrak. Although I liked it better forty years ago, it's still pretty good, but I hate New York City.
