I never knew and have just finished doing a little research on the subject because the other night I tripped and fell in the bath room after getting out of bed. I fractured my left little toe and it bled like crazy all over the bath room floor. I lay on the bathroom floor and could not get up. I struggled to scoot over to the emergency call button by the commode. Within 5 minutes two care workers arrived, saw the mess and called a ambulance to take me to hospital emergency. After spending the whole night receiving surgery and stiches and checking out my vitals and body I was released hours into the next day with my whole foot bandaged up and a slipper attached. My research told me that my little injury is quite common and painful. They are right about the pain. I doubt that I will be playing any soccer.

I can't imagine how a fracture could lead to bleeding, but anything is possible.

You have to remember to wear the watch however. I have a Call pendant to wear around my neck that I had taken off.

Sorry to read about your injury Lon. Just when you could start going to the dining room you break your toe and that probably locks you in your room for an additional week or two. One thing after another it seems.
Happy to read that you are alright though.

Not to make too light of your injury Lon but just think. Without the small toe, mothers all over the western world would have to figure out something else to say other than, “wee wee wee wee all the way home” to get that great giggle from their babies.

That might be where the "and" comes into play, as in I fractured my toe, (also cutting it) and it bled like crazy all over the bathroom floor.

@Lon Tanner, that sounds painful. Since the little toe is mostly muscle and blood, swelling is common during injuries, and that can be painful. I hope you heal soon. You don't really get into the subject suggested by the title, though - the purpose of the little toe. It aids in balance, and helps to push off when walking or running. Without it, you would walk differently.

Glad you're OK, Lon. Nothing lights me up quite like "stubbing" my toe.

@Lon Tanner So you had a compound fracture, huh? That must have been painful.

@Bobby Cole Without our little toes, we would be stuck with one little piggy eating his cow buddy while the other abstained. And the little piggy who stayed home would be stuck all by itself, unless the "wee wee wee wee" piggy lived elsewhere, in which case, never mind.

ps: I just looked it up to make sure I recalled correctly, and there's actually a second verse. Who knew?

Little known information but dern, even though it’s going to be useless, I’m going to have to look it up just to satisfy my habitual need for brain grain.

I hadn't thought of compound fracture. Long time since I was a boy scout.

You never know when you'll end up on Jeopardy.

I can't believe I'm in my 60s and never knew more than the first verse.
Mommy was intentionally ignoring one of my feet all those years.

Yup, I looked it up and was highly disappointed. A sad tale of piggies who, after all the wee wee weeing all the way home found themselves crying all alone. I mean, even ring around the rosie is much more enjoyable if the interpretation were not known.

Wow. Now I’m like, having visions of wiggly toes and stuff and flashbacks of feeling my toes cry after stubbing them on the bed leg.
    Total bummer.

I'm having flashbacks of bed-wetting after knoding off with someone saying "wee wee wee wee" over and over and over.

And I agree about Ring Around the Rosie. "Ah-Choo! Ah-Choo! We all fall down."
Shoulda Social Distanced instead of getting in a circle and holding hands. Clear failure of gummint oversight.
