I made homemade dog food for my little dog too, Maggie. (I lost him in 2017.) I wanted to know exactly what he was eating, especially after the chinese poisoning so many commercial pet foods a few years ago.
@Maggie Rose -- I have a vacuum sealer but I only use it with the bags, and mostly for meats in the freezer. It's nice to keep meat for up to a year with no freezer burn. Back when the pandemic hit I bought a bunch of meat "just in case" and now I spend spare time worrying about a power outage. I also bought a 15-pound bag of rice and 20 pounds of flour from Costco, and used the vacuum sealer to divide that up into useful portions. (There are just 2 of us to feed.) I've had my vacuum sealer for 10 or 15 years so it was a good investment IMO.
My great grand mother made pinto bean pie. There were 10-12 kids in family every morsel of food was used. Many years ago I submitted her recepie to a news paper column looking for unusual recipes. She also made cantalop pie. Both are pretty good..pinto pie had pumkin flavor
-Salad -Cheese & crackers (Murray's English Cheddar) -Fudgesicle -Probably a couple of coconut cookies later this evening
Leftover meatloaf from the freezer, baby lima beans, scalloped potatoes. And I ordered a bakery pumpkin pie so that will be dessert later.
Yes, I know what you mean. At least if we make it, we know exactly what they are putting into their bodies. There's a lot of bad stuff in many commercial dog foods. I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost a couple over the years. Pet grief is very hard. My last 2 pups are buried close to gardens. The very last pup I had suffered a lot. I created her a little corner garden and had her photo and some words engraved in a marble stone plaque. When I'm tending her garden it brings back all of the good memories. I'm sure you have many of your own as well. Dogs are just good! They help to make us good!
It might be something to put on one of my never-ending amazon lists. I buy something, mark it off and add something else to my list. Really, no freezer burn? That would make it very worth it in the end I think. I had a 4-day power outage in August just a couple of days after stocking my freezer and fridge for the month. I had just made the pups food and filled a freezer full of individual bowls. Four days! I couldn't save anything in the freezer or fridge. I had no phone. I couldn't even charge the stupid battery in my spine for pain relief. It was not good! It seemed like every house around me had a generator before the 4 days were over. Everyone but me that is. Looking at the dinner board it seems that you do a lot of cooking. I'm eating vicariously through all of the great posts!
We went to the Mexican restaurant down the road. It was a hard decision on whether to have the Hawaiian chicken fajitas again, or try the Chile rellanos; but I decided to take a chance and try them. Not bad, but definitely not the best one I have ever had; so unless I see something that looks worth taking a chance on, it will be the Hawaiian fajita next time. But still a delicious meal, and plenty left for the puppers to have a nice Mexican dinner, too.
-Salad -Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy -Sauteed green beans -Potatoes oven-roasted in duck fat -Fudgesicle
I can remember back when I used to love fudgesicles! I probably would still like them just as much today I don't know. For some reason, I hardly ever look at the frozen treats section while grocery shopping. I do have one favorite I try to treat myself to every few months or so. It's the Pepperidge Farm Coconut Cake (frozen). Oh my, it melts in your mouth. That's why I don't buy it often, cause I like it too much.
ah ha, I just got done eating light tuna & crackers as a snack because I didn't get around to dinner yet, and telling you in another post about one of my favorite desserts (coconut pie). I haven't tried coconut cookies though.
I am one of those people who can easily fall into new habits. For some reason I started eating ice cream after dinner. I NEVER eat ice cream, but I picked up the habit. I started keeping two different flavors on hand. And I was not having a small scoop...what would the point be? In an effort to impose portion control, I switched to fudgesicles and only eat one. But then there's the cookies... Regarding coconut cake, I just made my second batch of homemade coconut cookies. I also like the frozen pies like Sara Lee. I recall the ice cream pies that had the little piped peaks on top. Who could really wait for those things to defrost???
Kroeger's purchased a New York cheese maker called Murray's (after having their kiosks in the store under a partnership agreement), and I've taken to buying the end cuts of various cheeses just to try them. I'll have cheese & crackers every week or so for dinner, just to mix things up.
You're funny. If you fall into new habits that easily you need to be careful. There are lots of bad habits out there. You make your own coconut cookies? Sweet!
