Just a stretch on my part, but he could get some sympathy votes. It might be a case of "you don't what you have 'till it's gone" kind of thing although he won't be gone. He'll be back.

I was just wondering what would happen if he should happen to pass away before the election. I know Pence would be sworn in as president, but would he automatically become the GOP candidate?

That's an interesting question. @Beth Gallagher . I hope someone knows the answer.

At this point, that would be extremely complicated. Normally, the RNC would make the pick of a replacement and still would but the problem is that there are already thousands of ballots that have been sent in.
That being the case, if D. Trump’s name were to be removed from the candidacy, the court could potentially be packed with lawsuits which would force the House of Representatives to pick the candidate.

Another potential is that the election date could be extended to another date but that too would take the House to determine.

My guess is that it will be like a cold or, at worst, like the flu, and he'll be fine. Unless he dies or is seriously ill, we won't know, however, because any Administration would hide that information.

Keep him hospitalized and resting until this passes. He should be ok. Never mind working 20 hrs. per day. That's ridiculous. Let VP Pence carry the burden for now.

I guess we need to define how "recover" is measured.

My understanding is that at this point Pence would be tapped as candidate. There is no "rule" the RNC would be free to nominate anyone of their choosing as candidate.

Now the president will be out of site and in care of the military. Enjoy the show, popcorn ready?

It will be interesting to see what happens. Even though President Trump isn't on my "Favorites" list, wife and I do wish him and his wife a good/quick recovery.

The key word in your post is “nominate”. Before the RNC even thinks about choosing Pence or anyone else they will inevitably consult the electors. It is indeed fairly new territory but the electors of either party carry the weight of whom the nation gives the nod.
It’s a given that no one ran against the Trump / Pence ticket for a primary run but the electors still have to agree on the candidate of choice which was indeed D. Trump.
Anything less and we might have one heckova court case at the Supreme Court level.

Now, after all the speculation is out in the wind, does anyone know if M. Pence even wants the Presidency should D. Trump give up or is forced out of his run for a second term?

Edit: Whilst I do believe D. Trump will continue on for a second term, I think it would be a good time for congress to come together and start thinking about making a Constitutional amendment using a more tragic paradigm for choosing a candidate under a less desirable circumstance as this could be.
