This pop up is very annoying. It started yesterday after install Norton Utilities software. I checked my pop up blocker and it's ok. I don't have any idea where to find this so I can remove it or just stop it from popping up. Any ideas, anyone?
Never mind. Problem solved. There was even some smaller print at the bottom saying 'Don't show this again.' and I clicked on it. I hope that it doesn't appear again any where.
I bought a new laptop about a year ago and it was pre-loaded with the McAfee junk. About a month ago I started being bombarded with "YOUR PROTECTION IS ENDING IN ___ DAYS!!!" popups. I finally had to remove McAfee from my machine to get it to stop. (I use other antivirus programs.)
Even though I have Norton and it is up to date, I get the same thing. Also, All My Faves was my home page for ages. Well, recently this outfit from Romania with a site called Conatix contracted with them to show their ads. Only the ad takes up the lower 1/4 of the page and it is always; "this day in history." It is almost continuous and uber exasperating, so I went to Kazadu which has tons of interesting sites. I had tried it ages ago when it was first being developed, but not enough info, now I can get anywhere anytime and I love it.
Well, I thought the problem was solved and it's not. It has appeared elsewhere. I may have to contact Norton about it or uninstall and reinstall it. I'm now thinking it was attached to the download. Maybe I said yes to something without reading it thoroughly.
You can try going into the Programs area of the Control Panel (when you Uninstall programs that you don't want), and look for anything suspicious...then Uninstall it. >Press Windows button , then click Search . Type ‘Control panel’ and press Enter. >Open the Control Panel and go to Uninstall A Program. >Look for a program you do not recognize. I believe the Install Date might be there as a point of reference. This is the most straight-forward thing to try.
I did find a program with a close enough date that I didn't recognize. I even googled it. It had nothing to do with Norton so of course I uninstalled it. So far I haven't had any encounters yet since I last posted about it.
There you go. If that does not work, reply back and I'll see if I can post the instructions for searching and removing Scheduled Tasks, although those usually launch a program at specific times & intervals...so if you successfully killed the program, leaving the Task is no big deal. I hate those things. We've all just "Clicked Through" and ended up with messes. Way to treat a customer. huh?
Heck, every now and then when I am on FB or some other sites I get a pop-up that tells me that my Norton Anti-virus needs updating. The thing is, I use Apple or Mac. No Norton,
It's getting harder to find an antivirus program that doesn't become as annoying as the stuff they're supposed to protect you from. I have gotten rid of a couple of them because they keep trying to upsell me with pop-ups warning that my computer is unprotected, which leads me to think I have a problem when they're simply trying to sell me some other program they have.
My advice is to use caution with this; many people don't know which programs are essential and which can be safely removed.
There's a debate over whether or not to use a 3rd party anti-virus program in Windows 10 (because WIN 10 has a built-in anti-virus program called Microsoft Defender.) Many believe that Microsoft Defender is sufficient because it's quality has improved so much. A smaller number say that while it has improved, it merely sucks less, and that 3rd party anti-virus programs do a much better job. The consensus is that if you use a 3rd party program, you should turn off Microsoft Defender's anti-virus function so that the two do not collide with each other. Malware is a separate class of threats. More people claim that this function of Microsoft Defender falls short, and to use a 3rd party program. The difference here is that you can leave both enabled. I've been relying on Microsoft Defender for my anti-virus, and I installed a 3rd part anti-malware program. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing by relying on Defender to protect me against viruses...it depends on which website I've read last.
I believe the built-in Windows security is as good as any. I wouldn't have had McAfee at all but it came pre-loaded on my laptop when I bought it. Now that I've removed it, I rely on Windows security suite and Malwarebytes Premium.
Yeh, I was gonna say something about that. But this is not the registry. The only things that are somewhat crucial are the browsers and maybe some update software. Everything else are applications that can be reinstalled if deleted. Nothing relates to the operating system.
If you go read articles on it, you'll find lots of people who say "It's better than nothing," but it's not even as good as the free stuff. I have no way of knowing.
