Now that I'm going to be 65 and entering a new season in my life I have decided to try a few new things. I used to like to draw and paint a little in the art classes in High School and I always told myself one day I would take this up again. So this past Christmas Santa brought me a beginner's Acrylic paint set and I have already had a vision of me sitting underneath our shady oak tree with a canvas on an easel and me sitting next to it with a paint brush and palette in my hands. Who knows...maybe I'll end up being another Grandma Moses, but if I don't..I'll just have fun expressing my artistic side.
Something I've always thought about but never got past the thinking stage, mainly because I don't think I'm artistically talented enough and I worry about wasting my money on the essentials I'll need. Then I will have more stuff to get rid off. We have a few artistically talented members here. @Ina I. Wonder and @Lara Moss come to mind. I'm sure there are others but those 2 I know for sure.
I don't know if I have any real talent either, so I'm just going for enjoyment and trying something new.
I used to be able to draw fairly well and did a little with chalk, but never could fathom how to paint!
Hi @Babs Hunt , I see you made it here. We were hoping you would come see us. You'll like it here, we're always happy to see each other, and do some yacking. It's great that you've decided to rediscover an old passion such as your art. I looked at you profile, it doesn't say where you are located, It sounds like you might be somewhere that is still cold since your only having visions of yourself painting. But this will give you plenty of time to watch painting videos on YouTube. They are very good on instructing beginners as well as the advanced. Oh, excuse me, my name is Ina, and I am happy to meet you. I live NE of Houston, Texas, and it is already in the 60*s and 70*s here, at least for awhile.
Interesting, Ruby. I would think that if you can draw in one medium, you could in another, also. Guess not. I am fairly good at drawing if I'm copying a picture. But to just go outside and paint what I see. No way.
Hi Ina. I don't think I have figured out everything on filling in all of my profile info yet...but I will. In the meantime I'm from Louisiana, Lafayette to be exact and we've had a very mild winter here for the most part. Santa brought me that paint set but I was down with pneumonia until almost the end of January so I'm trying to catch up right now..and besides that Spring scenes will be much prettier to try and paint. I won't be to far from you come Monday night as I'm catching the trainn to Houston to go see my daughter and play with my youngest grandchild who just turned 18 months a few days ago. They live in Needville....are you around that area?
I went and looked at the Google map, and your daughter is about an hour and 15 minutes from me. She is SW of Houston just off of Interstate 69, and I am NE of Houston, just off of Interstate 69 as well. How long is the train trip? I've been wanting to check that out. It would be a new experience for me, and it can't be anymore expensive than flying. Since I live alone, and I'm always looking for something to do by myself.
From Lafayette to Houston it's a little over 5 hours...if there are no delays. As a Senior Citizen a round trip ticket costs a little over $60. I have been going back and forth for the past couple of years and really enjoy my train trips. I just bring a couple of bottles of water and a sandwich and snacks, a good book or two to read and before I'm even finished my book I am there. Food on the train I find very pricey but everything else is fine with me. I also bring a light jacket or sweater as they do it the air conditioning up high most of the time. You can even bring a laptop if you want.
Hey @Babs Hunt , want to be friends? (Giggling going on here) For that price I could easily travel there just for the fun of it. I think I checked once to see if my service dog could go, but they said no. He is only an 8 pound Chorky. What is weird is airlines, hotels, restaurants, and any other places I go, he can go with me. He has never been without me for more than 6 or 7 hours at a time. I've even tried to leave him with a friend that he likes, but he just cried and tried to find me for the whole period of a day.
I didn't realize train travel was that cheap! I used to do a 5 hr train trip from Chicago to Alton, Illinois when my daughter was in Dental school and that was in 1994. It cost about $50 on Amtrak. I love trains!! Too bad Illinois is so far for me now.
I don't know if it is that cheap to other destinations but it is from mine. And I love that because I can afford to visit my granddaughter more often because it is so inexpensive.
