This is the stuff I think about when people throw out the idea of splitting into two nations. There are so many states where the majority of the population is generally left-leaning and is crammed into a tiny space, while the right-leaning folks hold the majority of the real estate. You cannot take half the states and make them "The Blue States" (how did Republicans get screwed out of that color?) and call the other half "The Red States." Any such effort would required a massive relocation of population.

After the 2016 election, I ran some numbers for Virginia. When you do the math for the "Blue" counties and cities, you see that they have nearly half of the state's population crammed in only 5% of the square miles. Most of them are concentrated in the counties up north, while the rest are scattered around the state in a few cities. Heck, the county I moved from had 14% of the entire state's population.

Statewide, Maine generally votes Democrat because the largest population centers are in the south, and this is where most of the colleges and universities are, too.

I was gonna post that same map of Virginia's 2016 election results. The land mass ratios are pretty much the same.
