Last night I was going to go healthy with mixed vegetables. They didn't turn out well. This is why I'd like a timer on stove burners.
Needs a cream sauce, @Nancy Hart . I'm getting a grocery delivery today and ordered a rotisserie chicken, so we're having chicken, brown rice and roasted asparagus for dinner.
Most if not all will think this is gross but .. I made a Peanut Butter and Beef Bologna sandwich with chips. And I got a couple of Krispy Kreme doughnuts for later.
I hate when that happens. Just for grins I took a ride on the internet. Here's a product that slides behind the knobs and beeps at intervals until the knob it turned to the OFF position: $70 for a set for 4 knobs, works on gas or electric. They have products advertised to help dementia patients by cutting off the gas or electricity after a period of time. $600-$700 (plus installation for gas.) The electric version is sold through Best Buy...it just plugs in between the stove and the outlet. Of course, for $600 you can buy a lot of veggies. But they are a pretty good idea for someone who might need the protection from repeated forgetfulness.
Thanks John. I appreciate that. Looked at both products. Here's the scenario that always causes this: My office and TV room are upstairs. The kitchen is downstairs. Sometimes I get bored in the kitchen waiting for something to finish cooking so I mosey upstairs thinking "just for a few minutes." Get distracted by something on TV or the computer. Sometimes I only remember when the smell of burning stuff makes its way up the stairs. I wouldn't hear any kind of alarm unless it's REALLY loud. Also have push buttons on the burners. I estimate my stove is at least 50 years old. It was another hand me down from some friends who replaced theirs just about the time I bought the house. I try to remember to set the timer on the smartphone, but forget that too, or think I won't really need it this time. lol
I've done the same thing, but living in a small rambler, my tv room is right next to my kitchen...so at least I'd smell smoke. I also have several timers that I use. They have magnetic backs...a couple stay stuck to my fridge. In my small house, there is no place that I wouldn't hear them. Maybe you could keep a timer in your tv room so you set it when you sit down and it's right beside you. I hope you have smoke detectors installed, just to cover the worse-case scenario. Regarding the age of your stove...I never bought a new fridge until I moved here in 2010. I, too, always found the "we just remodeled" deals. I wish I still had a gas stove as old as your stove. I bought a "new one" maybe 20 years or so ago, and it has electronic igniters and an electronic stove thermostat & controls. In a power outage, I can manually light the burners, but cannot bake. I didn't even think of it when I bought the thing (not that I'd be baking a cake in a power outage.)
Similar thing with my old gas water heater. When the power went out at least you always had hot water. When it died I had to switch to electric, because of changes in the code for venting.
In a cooking mood today..so next three day or so we can choose from Chicken pot pie, goulash, or red beans and rice.
