I am a glutton, I know it, and everybody close to me must also know it. I clarify: body mass index of 22. sink like a rock in our pool. Yet, our once weekly (sometimes twice) sojourn to one of the wonderful buffets here adds 3000 or more calories at a sitting. Not that I can't quit eating, mind you. I simply eat to capacity at these affairs.

Daily, I eat very little during the day, if we do not eat out, and consume a "bucketful" of cooked veggies at bedtime. I love my pasta, have switched to whole wheat only, on the recommendation of my wife, make up a thick "soup" using tomato, white sauce like Alfredo, or low-fat canned gravy, as the "thickener", the "bucketful" must weigh at least 5 pounds, cooked. Oh, I carefully keep on track of protein consumed, and throw in enough chicken, turkey, fish, or other protein-rich stuff to assure no deficiency.

Basically, I weigh the same as I did at 20, over 50 years ago, though my image looks like a scarecrow. My image has always bothered me, and in my 20s, I could ripple my "pecs" at will, looking almost as endowed there as a woman.

I understand my eating habits leave something to be desired, but OTOH, I can squat on my feet, flat out, and rise up instantly, unlike lots of 74 year olds I know, worm my way under the car while working there, have nearly no aches and pains. Yet, my eating habits trouble me.

How might I be advised to "break this lifestyle", to quote an anti-drug commercial of the '90s? I know it's mind-set, habit, or bad habit, or, maybe I'm beyond help. That one I've considered in depth. "Set in our ways". Bull. I hate that phrase, yet seem to be abiding by it.

Is there any guiding means known to any of you of re-programming one's essentially bad habits? Religion won't do it, sorry to say. Frank

We are on the same boat, @Frank Sanoica. I'm just wondering sometimes why I have become like this. I used to be a skinny girl and I was only 110 pounds when I started working. But when I reached 40, it seems that my metabolism had quit on me hence I started to balloon to 140 pounds and sadly I am still hovering at 170 pounds until now. I had to admit that I am already struggling and hoping that I could go back to 160 pounds but the way things are going, in spite of the no-rice diet, the numbers in the scale wouldn't move.

We are also in the same boat! I'm 6'1" at 230 lbs. and my wife is around 5'4" and 155 lbs. She was 20 some pounds less when I first met her in early 2000. At the time, she was 52 and doing Country/Western and Line Dancing quite a bit. I was 210 (if I remember right), 51 and involved on the weekends with rodeo. Funny thing is, the Supervisor I worked for in 2000, mentioned to me about some weight gain she noticed. We both chuckled about it, but a little tummy was coming on me.

Since we have met, due to my surgeries and being married, our Country/Western dancing and my rodeo days are long gone. Only on a special occasion will we go to a bar/grill that has a live band, but only dance once or twice. Just don't feel as comfortable going to a nightclub as we did when we were single.

We eat and, a lot of times, definitely not the right kinds of food. We take a daily vitamin and vitamin supplements to help out with that, but still know we should eat better and less. My wife basically eats her lunch, brought from home, and that's it while she's at work. She gets much hungrier when she's at home and sometimes has to turn to chewing gun instead of eating. Part of this "hunger" is from getting bored, which she doesn't get at work. Thank God I don't get that hungry at home while she's at work. But, then again, I stay fairly active at home doing different things.

Exercise........well. Everyone gets exercise when they go shopping, so we can't say we get exercise doing that. Only thing is, too much shopping/walking around and we both feel it in our legs and feet that night. My left ankle, surgery on it in 1988 w/two screws and plate, will get painful enough that I now have a Wedge Pillow to prop my feet up on when I go to bed. Anyway, it's Motrin time for both of us that night. A lot of times, my wife (68) can come home pretty tired from her job and basically wants to sit in her recliner and watch tv. I don't blame her, but that sure isn't the way to loose weight or exercise! The weekends here can be just too hot and humid to do anything outside during the summer months (another reason for us to move out of Florida in a year or so).

But, the "bottom line" that I've researched online is: At our age, our metabolism really slows down and all of us know what happens then......right? Of course, some of us that have had surgeries, just can't do some of the "active" things we use to. And, some don't want to stop or change our eating habits! We say, "just ain't gonna happen, unless my doctor tells me I should and so far, that hasn't happened". Heck, my wife's doctor is short and has a belly a little bigger than mine! Sort of hard for him to tell her that she needs to lose some weight, when he can't even do it.

    Common experiences, yes...
    Many different approaches possible.
The latest I saw , that , if true, helped people over 60 years old better than , or the same as, other methods,
was the fuhrman diet. (basically an educated , all natural (no processed) meals .. )
    ...
Reports , naturally, are of good weight loss, improved joy and peace of mind and energy levels (to be active again - increased metab-o-lism :) , naturally, not having to grin and bear it, or push to get something done) .
    ...
This all fits well with how the body and mind works when not controlled by the society and medical authorities around us. (not at all DOING what the doctor with such a large belly himself does) instead, doing what is good and right and true.

I have watched some of Joel Fuhrman’s videos, and will go back and give it another look. We were going to the fitness center every day, and I would swim for an hour, but with the closing of many businesses this year, we were not able to do that. Even after they opened back up, the sauna and hot tub are not open, although the pool is open.
I have been working on an eating plan with more veggies and raw foods, but have kind of gotten off track lately.

Here is the food pyramid that Dr. Fuhrman recommends for health and rejuvenation, and the link to his eating plan:

    Thanks!

Notice all the plans that "work", free or costly, agree with the Creator's instructions to men. (in the Bible)
When people simply do what is right,
    basically,
    all is well with them.
When people start listening to the experts, eating and drinking and breathing (and injecting their babies with) toxins and unhealthy things,
    bad stuff naturally happens.

Religion would likely ruin you Frank.

What you are doing, don't fix it, if it is working.

On the other hand, if you want to be prepared for what's coming, start taking 2 tablespoonfuls of apple cider vinegar , raw, unfilter, twice a day. (or once if you prefer). Or a little less throughout the day several times.
It is usually taken in a glass of distilled (or at least filtered, NEVER tap water by choice any more) ,
with a spoonful of LOCAL HONEY (From your property/ back yard/ attic ) ? HAHAHA no.....
just a spoonful of Honey , don't worry about local, but the raw unfiltered honey may be totally awesome ....

These two basics - ACV and Honey, (and with many reasons: distilled water),
    and a charcoal/ vitamin c / shower filter ,
will assure better transitions to what is coming soon....

I saw an hour long "info-mercial" by /about / Fuhrman.... I was upset he did not put more information what to do in the time slot...

but I was impressed his plan is basically the same with a few modifications as for the last century or more - basically unprocessed, unpoisoned, un-manmade , foods and snacks and such, without chemicals or additives or un-natural stuff...

fruits and vegetables of course, seeds, juices without added sugar , even some meats (but no pork) ,

all the good things that test good when consumed, none of the harmful things that test bad.... as much as possible, gently...

One thing of note, perhaps, for people over 50 years old ,
    it
is something they can DO, when they have enough income .... it even makes things easier, I would think, to get a pre-made plan to use,
and stick to it, at least three weeks if there is no contra-indication the first few hours or days (i.e. nothing bad happens) ....

The "testimonies", paid probably, hopefully true, of people 62 years old, and 75 years old, and even 85 years old,
who did the plan and lost 7 pounds in a week or four weeks, and kept it off,
    and continued
with slow weight loss, and improvement in their energy level and overall feeling better - it is doable ...

and often the old age troubles that people expect with old age, lessen, or greatly lessen, even to being no more sometimes - as the health increases, the problems once thought permanent and 'normal' for old people, are gone... no carte' blanche, but often...
