I was tired from taking down Christmas decorations at my place and at a friend's that is an overachiever at Christmas decorating time. I gargled with one shot of Spanish brandy and swallowed breathing out the burning fumes at 5:30 PM, saying adios to any viral intruders, and then off to bed at 6 PM to be awakened every couple hours with loud fireworks. I would have slept through midnight but my neighbor set off what sounded like 4 sticks of 60% nitro. It shook my bed and it was an hour before I could get back to sleep with the war of the fireworks in full force. I noticed all my neighbor's lights were on and I called over to an 87-year-olds to check on her and she said she was up to keep the dog calm. She had given him some hemp oil-soaked doggie treats from the vet and reported he was very calm. She was also up because she said she had the munchies. I have a feeling she sampled the doggie treats to calm her nerves. I prefer my nightly brandy.
I went outside at midnight to watch the rather-spectacular and highly-illegal skyrocket display put on by someone down the street. Thoroughly enjoyable, it was and I didn't have to drive home afterwards. Win-win! Things calmed down in the neighborhood after that.
I have been going to bed early 8:30 for weeks because of boredom and last night was no different. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
We were in bed around 10PM, same as usual, but at around 11:30, people started shooting off firecrackers and fireworks, as well as lots of gunshots from the people who had guns and not fireworks. Poor Poodle did his best to survive at his place at the foot of the bed by my feet, but then it got loud, and he crawled up and laid on top of me for a while, and finally burrowed down under the covers until things quieted down. He is actually much better than when I got him, and any kind of loud noise had him cowering in my lap and shaking like a leaf. Now, he usually gets get somewhere closer to me, and worries, but doesn’t shake. One of his odd things is not liking it when he can’t see Bobby’s face, and then he gets scared and growls. Bobby had put on some kind of a painting mask and came in the house, and poor Poodle panicked. As soon as Bobby took off the mask, he was fine. I am wondering if something might have happened to him before we got him that made him afraid of someone with a covered up face ?
I didn't make it. Turned off the TV and lights around 11.30 p. A cold rain falling. Never heard a thing outside. Peeked out one time during the early morning hours. A heavy snow was falling
First, we watched a few episodes of Yellowstone on Peacock. Stopped it and turned on a ABC, CBS and NBC, but we just aren't into Rap and Hip-Hop music. Guess today's generation doesn't know, want to know or like Motown or Classic Rock groups. Was in bed by 10:30. Heard a few firecrackers and/or gunshots, but both seemed miles away. Woke up at 11:55, at midnight, wife and I wished each other "Happy New Year" and went back to sleep. I was up this morning at 7:15 getting ready to take down Christmas tree and other indoor decor. We had a ZOOM with wife's family in So. California. That was nice.
Interesting that so many mention gunshots. I didn't hear a single gunshot and my community has a lot of multiple gun owners. I can't imagine any responsible gun owner shooting a bullet in the air. Maybe they were shooting blanks.
No gunshots going on here, where nearly everyone has at least one gun. I think that's more of an image that television and media people want everyone to have about anyone who lives in a rural area and has guns, and if the media says it happens, a large percentage of people will swear that they saw it happen or heard the gunshots. It's kind of like the razor blades in the Halloween candy thing.
Yes, propaganda to ban fireworks, and because most people can't tell the difference between a gunshot and a firecracker, it just sets the stage for banning fireworks. Last fourth I heard gunshots and reported it to the police and they tried to argue that it was fireworks and they cruised the neighborhood and found nothing. One young officer said no way I could tell the difference. I told him it was a .22 handgun and 5 shots were fired. He just made a face and they left. I enlisted my friend's help and with high power flashlights, we checked out the neighborhood and discovered a bloody opossum that died trying to get out of a backyard.
