I posted this in game chat here http://www.seniorsonly.club/threads/game-chat.2489/page-415 So I’m heading to the city today as he’s been flown down to the major hospital in the city Adelaide SA for surgery . I think it’s @Yvonne Smith who’s mentioned the Apple Watch and it’s Heath benefits and the ability to make phone calls from a tiny watch ,well that’s what hubby did yesterday called me from his watch to let me know he was hurt ,eventho I was only inside I wouldn’t have heard him calling me as I was right up,the front of our home which would be 30 mtrs away from the shed where he was The watch detected he’d had a fall and wanted to phone emergency services but he was able to dismiss that as he knew I was here to assist him
WOW , what a story, @Kate Ellery ! ! I am so sorry to hear that your husband fell and broke his hip. That will be a hard experience for him to recover from, and not be able to move around much. Hoping that they can set everything properly, and saying a prayer for his recovery and fast healing. I am really glad that he had on the Apple Watch ! I love the security that I feel when I am wearing the Apple Watch, and knowing that it can tell if I fall, and will call for help if I do not respond, and that it is always there if I should need to make that emergency call like your husband had to do. Do you both have Apple Watches or did you answer on a regular phone ?
I got a watch first and then he liked the idea of it so he got one as well ,he can even control his hearing aids from the watch so if he’s in noisy environment he can turn his heading aids up or down depending on where he is . We both have the series 6 it’s the first time we’ve had an Apple Watch we had another brand but found it to unreliable @Yvonne Smith I answered his call on my watch
There are a lot of reasons for a senior to have an Apple Watch, and each year, they seem to get better and be able to do more things to help us keep track of our health, and to give us that feeling of security. You can track your health with the heart rate app, as well as now also being able to do an EKG anytime you think you need it, and it can be sent immediately to your cardiologist; so you are much more likely to get medical treatment faster. You can also easily monitor or check your oxygen level , to make sure that you are getting enough oxygen in your blood. You can track your sleep patterns, as well as see how you are breathing and how your heart rate is at night while you are asleep. Sleepmatic shows when you are in a light sleep or a deep sleep, as well as a graph of overnight heart rate. The Apple Watch can sense if you fall, or even stumble, and it will shake on your wrist and send a message asking if you fell and if you are okay. You can respond that you did or didn’t fall, and whether you need help or not. Should you completely pass out, or for some reason can’t respond at all, the watch will call emergency as well as your emergency contact people, and will also send your location so help can find you. There is an “emergency button” on the side of the watch, and if you hold that button down, it also calls for help. If you are exercising/swimming, the watch cannot be shut down, so you can’t accidentally turn it off if you are trying to get help. This is so much better than using a phone, and you never miss a call again, because you can feel it shake your wrist, and you can see who is calling you. It is easy to answer a phone call with the watch, and you can talk when you are driving and not need earbuds. My phone is always on silent, so it never rings; but the watch shakes on my wrist. There are little answers that you can use if someone texts you, so you can let them know you got the message and will respond later. Security is very important to seniors. I feel like I am more prepared for any kind of emergency, anywhere it happens. I can always get help by using the watch, and even if I pass out and can’t tell anyone I need help, the watch will call for help, and send people to my location. It also alerts my emergency contacts in this situation. There are a lot of other features that are nice to have (although not essential), so you are alerted when there is going to be bad weather, and can put the most important complications on your watch to let you know the things you are interested in. Beautiful ... the Apple Watch has so many different faces, and so many possibilities for watch bands, that you can always have a watch that looks just like you want it to, and with numbers large enough to read the time. I really like being able to have favorite picture from my photo screen as a scrolling face on the watch. Each time I raise my hand, it shows a different picture, and you can put on around a dozen of your favorite pictures. There are a lot of other great features, but this covers the main ones.
I hope your husband fares well, Kate. I need to get off my butt and look at getting one of these. These are way better that the "I've fallen down and I can't get up" buttons, and over time are cheaper, too.
My hubby was flown to Adelaide ( city ) by the flying doctors ,he was due for a total hip replacement yesterday then someone more serious came in so hubs surgery was put off til today ..it’s only 6 am here now so I’ll go see him if he’s not in surgery this morning
I know there are prob other watches out there but I’d never consider anything but a Apple Watch ,my hubby checked his oxygen levels while the ambulance was attending to him and the watch showed the same as their readings We paid $599 for our watches which are the current models 6 I’d say without doubt it’s saved Ron’s life just imagine if I was out for hours or he lived alone . @John Brunner
Yep @Yvonne Smith call me a big kid but I’ve got and like my talking Minnie Mouse on my watch ...I touch her and she says a very cheerful Good Morning .,,or good afternoon and is always smiling
My hesitation is I do not have an Apple phone...I have an Android. So I need to get a used Apple phone I could use to enable the watch's features and whose O/S I can update via wiifi (meaning not get a cell account for it.) I am not up to speed on Apple technology so it's a struggle to not screw up and waste my money. Again, I would get a watch with its own SIMS card so it can operate independent of the cell phone. The Samsung (Android) watches do not have all the same "fall sensing" and "one touch 911" features as Apple. The Samsung has an emergency button that calls specific contacts you have set, but not 911. I've been waiting for Christmas trade-ins to settle down. I'm thinking a lot of used phones and watches have hit the market after the holiday gift-giving. And a new iPhone was released in October. I need to find a reliable EBay used Apple seller and just put my fate in his/her hands.
@John Brunner in Australia there are dozens or businesses that refurbish used iPhones and rather than buying someone else’s problem on eBay you’d be better off looking at a refurbished one from a dealer who’s got lots of good reviews . I always check reviews for a good idea of the business before buying anything now days . There is a Apple watch that has a sim card but it’s $200 dearer then the one I bought of course as soon as they release a new one the older ones are a bit cheaper in price ,I seen the 5’ s being advertised for just over $300 recently Ron always had android but he went with Apple since getting some fancy updated hearing aids he can operate with either his watch or his phone The HA were designed to work with the Apple system
@Yvonne Smith I’ve just spoken to hubs he is second on the list for surgery this morning that was at about 7.30 am At this stage we both have no idea what is likely to be offered in his recovery program ,I’d suggest he’d be offered respite in Adelaide at a rehab centre but he’s strong willed which will be in his favour for recovery but i can see him saying nah we will be OK ....... he really needs to consider me as well , Ive already suggested getting a hand held shower for “his” shower which is a good size . (I use the ensuite and he uses the main bathroom ) . But he’s objecting so we will just have to wait and see Won’t we
That's a good idea. I'll have to see if we have such a thing around me. I am not in an urban/suburban setting.
