I lived in North Carolina for a couple of years. I was working for a company about thirty miles from where I was living, and they called me one morning to tell me that I didn't have to come to work if I wasn't comfortable driving in the snow. Reminding them that I was from Maine, I went in anyhow. There was maybe an eighth of an inch of snow, all of which had melted by 10:00 am. Nevertheless, there were accidents all along the route.
I've had many days working in Northern Virginia where I was one of perhaps 5% of the workforce who showed up to work. I'd much rather go in when it's so bad that no one else will bother than try to go in on a marginal day when all the amateurs are out and navigating around them is impossible.
So the forecast that started at 4.5" of the white stuff on Sunday and then went to 0.0" and back to 4.5" is now at 5.7" That's quite a bit for us. The temps have been down into the teens the past several nights, so it's gonna stick on the roadways. And in typical central Virginia fashion, on Monday it's gonna keep snowing, then maybe sleet, then maybe a little rain, then back to the frozen stuff. The only real catastrophe is the anticipation & reaction and not the actual precipitation. Goodbye bread, eggs & milk! I better go get some diesel for my tractor and pick up salad fixins before the zombie apocalypse hits...I'm just about out of both. Then Tuesday it will be business as usual.
SNOW ….. Please send some our way.. We need SNOW very badly.. So far this winter, it has been very dry in the snow department.. To our village, SNOW means lots of $$$$.. We also would like some cold weather like -40c for about a week or so... Also that is $$$ for our village.. We can easily use a 40cms snowfall and even then, it isn't enough.. For sure, several snowfalls of around 40cms will be greatly appreciated.. Who do I thank for this in advance ????
@John Brunner , all that stuff is predicted to be freezing rain for us. And I'm 'bout out of bread. I better run to Food Lion tomorrow and stock up.
I always ask the cashiers to hook me up with the French Toast parties that must be going on when people realize they bought all that stuff and the roads are clear 12 hours later...time and time again. Heck, I'll bring the syrup! But seriously, we all know to stay out of that mess. Ice is non-navigable...snow ain't much better. I just got a text message that our Sunday church services have already been cancelled.
Oh, that reminds me. I better get milk and eggs, too, in case I want to make French toast. My brother hit an invisible icy patch, ran down an embankment and lost three fingers off his right hand. So I don't venture out until the roads are clear.
That's horrible!!! [*shudders*] I've had my slide-into-a-guardrail issues, but never anything like that.
So the current forecast here east of Charlottesville is: -Snow starts Sunday at 1AM and turns to ice/rain at 5PM. 5.5" accumulation over 16 hours. -Ice/rain continues from 5PM Sunday until 6AM Monday, then turns back to snow. -Snow continued from 6AM Monday until 9PM Monday. Another 1.5" over 15 hours. -9PM Monday it tapers off into light rain. Very odd that it snows during the daylight hours but turns back to rain overnight. It will all be gone soon: Tuesday's high is 43°F Wednesday's high is 45°F Thursday's high is 49°F Friday's high is 56°F When I was a kid in Indiana, it snowed and stayed put all winter long, and you could sled ride without missing your window of opportunity. We had an inch or two of the white stuff last night and this morning, but it was very light and no trouble at all.
Still calling for 4"-6" starting tonight through 1AM Monday...although there are snow showers forecast throughout the day on Monday. Last night's low was supposed to be 18°F but it got down to 12°F at my place. Buncha micro climates around these country regions...
Well...although the snow in my area has been insignificant.. the winds (hurricanelike) have kicked down few cable towers and we were w/o internet during two days. We will be credited....
My forecast is down to under 4" overnight and tomorrow, with a "wintry mix" on Monday. It's yet to start, but I can see it approaching on radar.
