I bought this place in Louisa County, Virginia in October of 2009. It's 1/2 mile off the paved road. Here's a pic partway down the driveway after a few inches of snow we had in 2012:

My house is down there somewhere.

I did not move into the place until June of 2010. I dodged a bullet. I cannot imagine being in such a storm after just moving in and not really being settled. My neighbors tell me that there were over 40 downed trees between our houses and the paved road.

Here's a pic of that 2010 storm in Vienna VA (just a few miles outside of DC), early into it:

I have a 32hp Kubota and have plowed us out of just one storm since I've moved here.

I take it you lived outside of Baltimore at the time?

    Gotcha.

    Quite the experience, wasn't it?

Yes. It took the farmer with his huge front-end loader six attempts to get up the hill. He gave up after the first three and came back the next day.

Wife and I were talking about an air lift to get us out of here. :p

My neighbors here told me that he and his wife cut up and moved a few of the felled trees before looking at the dozens that were remaining, and then they called for help.

Here's my tractor looking at 3 felled trees that came down from a recent ice storm:

The roots are a good 20' or more off to the left. They were tall!!! When one fell it took the others (there were 3 more downed off-camera that did not cross the road.)

That "driveway" is 1/2 mile long. There's always something to move out of the way. We try to keep it cut back to minimize interruptions.

Freezing rain is terrifying. We've been undergoing an off-and-on "wintry mix" since 0800 yesterday and expected to continue to 0600 tomorrow.

    Same here.

    It's good to be retired.
