Now, I'm about as religious as a bumper jack, but the Hymn that really grabs me emotionally and sends me soaring is "The Holy City", especially the version performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra, with tenor Stanford Olsen as soloist, as appears on YouTube. I would import it to the Forum, but I can't do this anymore because I no longer have PASTE on my drop-down box. Hal
Here you go: I always liked the Christmas hymn "O Come O Come Emanuel." It has that Gregorian chant vibe to it because--as you likely know--it is a type of Antiphon.
Out of all the hymns out there, that one gives you the best opportunity to go from low-key to belting it out.
My sister loves gospel music. She spends a lot of time playing gospel songs on the piano, and I do enjoy hearing her play.
Thank you much, @John Brunner! "The Holy City" really does it for me, along with the sight of the great Tabernacle Organ and the sound of the Orchestra and the 400 or so members of the Choir. Very uplifting! Hal
Lots of Biblical and literary references woven into popular song lyrics, and most are completely unaware of it. Speaks well of those who composed the music. Sort of belies their reputations.
The chorus, but not the entire song. There are 5 chords in that hymn. Rock of Ages is only 3 chords...the entire hymn.
