http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/02/20/jeb-bush-republican-presidential-race/80033408/ I really love it when the field narrows, it's like pulling the weeds out so you can see what's really growing in that field.
The Chicago Sun Times ran a story that Ted Cruz would be suspending his campaign, attributing the story to unnamed staffers. I haven't seen it anywhere else though, so I don't know.
I don't even think he really wanted to enter the race...I think his family sort of "pushed" him into it. He doesn't have the cocky confidence (or some might call arrogance) that both his dad and brother have and to me his even entering the race was a waste of money and time.
We listened to Jeb's speech where he said that he was suspending his campaign, and it seemed to us like he had already made up his mind that (unless something seriously changed for him) that they would drop out after the South Carolina information came out last night. He seemed really prepared to say that he was quitting, and he was one of the first ones that they put on television after they started making the announcements of the winners. We are kind of waiting to see what Ben Carson will do. He and John Kasich both rated lower than Bush did, but Carson said that he was going to continue, in his speech after the primary. I think that he is probably the most honest candidate that we have running, and maybe also the one who really does care a lot about making America better again; but I just cannot see him as being an effective president. He can't even stand up for himself very well in the debates, so how would he do it in international affairs ? Whether he actually did the things he is accused of, or was set up by another candidate; Ted Cruz has lost a lot of popularity and "TrusTED" from people since the letters that told people to vote for him , and also the information-passing that Carson had suspended his campaign. Then, he followed that up with making phone calls saying that Trump was dropping out of the race, and then sending out letters that looked like checks to Texas voters, and which are illegal to send. All-in-all, this has made Cruz look pretty bad for many voters. I really would be shocked if he suspended his campaign though, and am surprised that his people would even suggest that he might be doing that. But....... One just never know about politics.
Ken, I heard the same thing but it was just a rumor. I saw Ted Cruz speak this morning on Face The Nation and he's very much alive and kickin'. Kasich and Carson also say they're not going anywhere. Bush has a lot of campaign money left over. The Republican Party will likely give it all to Rubio since Rubio is closest to Bush's views and since Bush and Trump were rivals.
You're probably right but the article said he would be quitting after the Nevada caucus so, even if it were true, he'd still be alive and kicking today. It was worth passing around nevertheless, since it was the Chicago Sun Times and not an anonymous blogger. A similar story reported that Jeb Bush would be quitting after New Hampshire, but it didn't become official until he actually announced, so very few news outlets carried it. You're right in the Rubio is next in line for the GOP elite's blessing, particularly since he beat out Cruz in South Carolina. At this point, Carson or Kasich might be pushing for a VP slot. I'm afraid Cruz and Rubio might have burned their bridges, but perhaps not.
This is the big difference in having a 2-party system. Candidates are screened and trimmed down properly using a process. The Philippine election was patterned after the US style but it was changed when President Cory Aquino drafted a new constitution in 1987. We now have a multi-party system but in reality the party is an offshoot of a candidate. What's on the surface now are the personalities particularly those who are popular hence have the greater chance to win. Tsk, tsk, it's really sad that Philippine politics had gone to the dogs. I had seen the CNN reports on the primaries. The retreat of Jeb Bush would ease the tension on him and his family. Surrendering the flag is better than fighting a losing war.
Ben Carson is a very nice and honest man. A godly man too. But I agree with you that he would not be effective as President...but maybe a good influence on a President as a Vice President.
We have talked about a Trump/Carson ticket, and personally, I think that would be astoundingly good and would be a winner. I think that there are a lot of people who like Carson, but just can't see him as an effective president. He would make a great statesman-VP, and a super diplomat. Bush, Kasich, and Cruz especially, but probably Rubio, too; have pretty much closed off any possibility of their being on the ticket with Trump if he wins, and also most of the candidates who have already dropped out, except Mike Huckabee. I like Huckabee and think he could make a good VP also. One thing about this election campaign, a whole lot of people who had no particular interest in politics have been following this one, and talking about it.
I think Jeb got out because Trump went after the Bush family for not releasing all the papers on the 911 hearings. Probably because the implicate the Bin Laden family to the 911and Bush family are close friends. That it traces back to Saudi and not Afghanistan.
Martin, Trump is leaving no rock unturned isn't he…sheesh Yvonne, people will all be thinking that if something were to happen to Trump while president then Ben Carson would be president…and no one is going to like that. It would be campaign suicide to pick Carson as a running mate in my opinion. Rubio would be perfect and Trump is quick to forgive once he's on top….it's only when he's threatened that he gets ugly….unless its hillary or bush. Cruz's staff is now purposefully telling lies about Rubio. Guess they figure they got away with it in Iowa with Carson so they did it again.
It was impressive to watch Trump speaking last night. He looked absolutely Presidential ! It was a very interesting comparison to both Cruz and Rubio, both of whom spent their talking time acting and sounded like the two brawling little boys, and attacking Trump (behind his back, or at least where he couldn't speak back), and not saying much of anything with substance. Both Bobby and I thought that Chris Christie looked good, and was watching everything like he was looking out for Trump's back. I think that they will do well together, and I would not be suprised if Trump finds some place for Ben Carson on his team, if Carson is willing. One thought that I had was , after seeing the HUGE difference in demeanor between Donald Trump, and the foolishness of the other two, was to wonder if the whole thing was a smart move by Trump. Suppose that he teased the other two until they were slathering and acting like two kids fighting, and then he steps up to the podium, US flags behind him, looking for all the world like President Trump about to the address the nation. He is just a smart enough cookie to pull that trick off, I think.
I think he needs a vice president like Jesse Ventura and I think that might stop people from thinking of killing him because Jesse would go after them for sure
Trump definitely needs to pick a VP that has played the "Republican game"...one who knows all the ends and outs of that Party, etc. and who is fed up with the way they have been playing the game too. Someone who knows all about how the wheels go round and who makes them go round in all the different departments, etc. and the House and Senate. Trump needs a Mentor who knows it all when it comes to our Government because if he does manage to win the Election and become our President..those in place already will definitely be out to get him anyway they can.
