I suppose I just prefer to plan my own meals and buy groceries. I hate sounding like I don't appreciate the gift, because I do. I just don't like feeling manipulated by Blue Apron's tactics.
The duckduckgo home page always has a link to an "article" on these services. I've read reviews just out of curiosity, and have never really been tempted to try them. I get ALLRECIPES emails and am often eating something I've never before tried making within 2 days after receiving the recipe. I don't need the service to introduce me to new stuff.
Well, that was fast. Got here a day early; luckily I have no life and was here to bring it in off the porch. Several random photos for your viewing pleasure... or not.
The meat packaging said "use or freeze within 5 days of receipt," so I tossed the chicken and ground pork into the freezer. Not feelin' it for cooking today.
Everything seems OK; no rotting produce or anything. Individual packages of condiments, sauce ingredients, etc. seem handy. That 3-meal box was $60, so I could have done better at the grocery store, but then I wouldn't have the nifty recipe cards and I'm sure it was not cheap to ship.
I mentioned I've read reviews of these. I'm spending over $300/month just for me on groceries. Of course, that includes coffee, cereal, milk, bread, etc. But the spread doesn't seem to be all that huge...especially considering the cost of delivery.
One advantage to this would be that I don't have to buy full-sized packages of ingredients, condiments, spices. These are pre-measured so just enough for the recipe. The pasta dish has creme fraiche and I'd normally have to buy a larger container of it, etc. All this is moot; I have no intention of continuing the service.
Yeh, I know you don't plan on continuing it. I was just thinking out loud as to the comparative costs in general. I have a half container of cream in my fridge I bought for a specific recipe that I doubt that I'll use up. And I assume their spices would be reasonably fresh.
It might be worth it to try if you find one of those $20 off a trial package deals. I think my youngest daughter tried them all out that way. Also, you can select how many people you're cooking for and they send different sized packages. I'm sure this is a good deal for a lot of people; it's just not for me.
OK, today's the day! Meal #1 will be the Korean Pork and Rice Cakes. I need to get this stuff cooked and this recipe has the most "produce" that needs to be used ASAP.
Chop! Chop! Maybe I'll start one of those business, and send food that's already rotten so people don't feel pressured.
