If it counts, Edith Wilson, Woodrow Wilson’s second wife was probably the most influential and most criticized first ladies. For the most part, she took over a lot of the duties of the Presidency when Woodrow had his stroke. In order to present anything to the President it had to be filtered through his wife first which was more than likely the reason she was so highly criticized. In a left handed way, she was the first female President of the U.S.
