.We had two entertainers singing to us from the patio at dinner tonight. Despite my extremely poor hearing I could make out a old familiar song. I was never a Hank Williams fan but I liked the song. Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou Jambalaya, and a crawfish pie and a file gumbo 'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou. Thibodeaux, fontainbleau, the place is buzzing Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen Dress in style, go hog wild, me oh my oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou. Jambalaya, a crawfish pie and a fillet gumbo 'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou. Jambalaya, and a crawfish pie and a file gumbo Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
There are some music styles where those of us who do not dance can feel comfortable getting out there and moving around. Zydeco is at the top of the list (although this technically is not in that style, but it's close enough.)
I've always wondered about that part of the lyric, "I'm gonna see my machez amio", since there are no such words. I think it' probably "ma cher ami - 0" , with the "O" added to make the rhyme. Cajuns refer to people dear to them as "cher", usually pronounced "sha".
It's the first time I have seen the words in print. I've been hearing and singing it wrong all this time. Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh Me gotta go 'fore the sea rolls down the bayou. Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio Cause tonight I'm gonna see my Cheri Mio. Thibodeaux, fontainbleau, the place is buzzing Blah blah blo , fonblah blo.
Here's a verse from it: "Thibodeaux, Fontaineaux, the place is buzzin' Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen, Dressed in style, go hog wild, me-o my-o, Sonofagun we'll have big fun on the Bayou!" Hal
