This morning I saw news coverage of last night's Academy Award presentations, which made me glad I didn't waste my time watching it! To me, there hasn't been a satisfying film production since 1997's "Titanic", and even it omitted important historical facts! This is why all my movie watching has been either from my Home Collection of 400+ titles, or by watching TCM (Turner Classic Movies), which presents mostly uninterrupted B&W films from the 1930's through the 1950's, which are made from Great Stories, and cast with Great Actors, led by Great Directors! Well, since we watch a lot of both old and new movies, we do watch the Oscars. Glenn Close was present and my wife was an extra in the movie, Air Force One, when Glenn played the VP. Wife was in the beginning, during the banquet and right after, as Harrison Ford was leaving the banquet. We have the movie, can pause it and see my wife. However, since we hadn't been to a movie since the last Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker, none of the movies up for Oscars we've seen. It was a pretty weird Oscars, but it's the way it had to be done. Some controversy going on now, and talked about on CNN, about Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor Oscar, instead of the dude who starred as Black Panther. Some of our movie collection include: Under Siege, Grownups, Weekend At Bernie's, Get Smart, Last Vegas. Last Vegas is an absolutely hilarious movie, but have to have a sense of humor to watch/enjoy it.
Yes, because it's no longer about talent, but just another "participation trophy" exercise with a bunch of badly-dressed participants. P.S. Chadwick Boseman was a very talented actor and I have no doubt he did an excellent job in the Black Panther movie. I saw him as James Brown in "Get On Up" and he was such a talent. Tragic that he died so young.
The number of viewers was way down last year and was half that amount this year. Since it has become a political event, people are turning it off.
I can remember when some winners used the platform to talk about the lack of diversity in Hollywood. Well, apparently it worked!
I think the last time I watched them was in the 60s. The awarding of participation trophies is not my cup of tea.
The best thing to happen to ANY of the celebrity awards shows is Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes ceremony in 2020. At one point he told the audience to stay away from politics in their acceptance speeches because they knew nothing of the real world and had less time at school than Greta Thunberg. It’s on YouTube but I didn’t wish to present it here because there is some language and some fairly awkward jokes that might be offensive to some. He could have left that stuff out and still made some terrific points but Gervais is who he is. And as an answer to the OP, nope, I do not watch celebrity awards shows of any kind.
Ok, to go away from the topic of the Oscars, for a moment, what about the awards that go to athletes? MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA and all Olympic athletes get awards (medals). They participate in an event, win 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and get a medal/award for how good they were. Shoot in professional rodeo, a contestant can win a new saddle, boots, trophy buckle and, sometimes, even a new-beautiful horse trailer. And, that is along with the money they win! Each event finals winner at The American Rodeo won a very nice $100,000 check.
Ah yes, athletes. Let’s see, the best knee whilst the National Anthem is playing goes to...? The best left fist in the air at an olympic ceremony goes to,...? The best bunch of nonsense spewed about politics goes to...? The best racist statement goes to,.,.,..? The highest paid player who still doesn’t know how to read properly goes to...? The most enhancement drugs taken goes to.....? The most women smacked around in a season goes to...? The most women and or men slept with in a single season goes to....?
Guess you don't like sports, do you Bobby? Ok, now, just what do you like? LOL Don't people have to have a platform to protest on??
Uh....I love sports. I’m a bodybuilder and did extremely well wrestling one year in high school. That said, a billionaire athlete is suddenly a political and racial expert because he plays professional basketball. Right. I do not recall ANYONE of yesteryear’s athletes OR celebrities having anything to say about politics or back some idiotic protest. Film celebrities knew about acting and athletes knew about their sport and that’s it. They thanked whomever they wanted to thank when they hit the podium and bye bye I love you. Wave Wave.....
