I will have this for my dinner tonight. It's one of my favorites.

What's it stuffed with? That mushroom doesn't appear to be stuffed in your pic. I love all kinds of mushrooms.

I love mushrooms, but don't believe I've ever had a portabella. I've often thought of picking one up and trying it, but never have.

To me, they’re overrated but that’s my opinion. They’re huge and if cleaned properly yes they’re good and also yes if you’re looking for presentation but there are far tastier mushrooms out there like morels, shiitakes and oyster mushrooms.

Like most folks, I've primarily eaten the white button mushrooms that are sold in grocery stores. As a child in Indiana, we would hunt for morels, but at that stage of life I was not interested in expanding my palate. As an adult I've cooked lots of Asian mushrooms as well as fungi (some fresh/some dried.)

Now I want to get a portabella just so I can say I've tried it.

I read some about mushrooms recently, because I didn't know which ones to buy.

They said the 3 main types you find in the store are all Agaricus bisporus, just different ages. Button mushrooms are the toddlers, Cremini mushrooms are the teenagers, and portobellos are the adults.

The Portobellos used to be discarded because they were considered too ripe. Then they discovered folks liked them. I think I would too. I've never had one.

It’s a given that there might be some Ports at the store which are already cleaned but in case they aren’t, here are couple of good tips on cleaning a portobello Before you try them.

I suppose I don't have a discerning palate, but white button mushrooms are my favorite. I like them raw or in salads, or sauteed with a little garlic butter. Having said that, I have yet to meet a mushroom I didn't like.

I have had several Portobello mushrooms and I find them bland and a bit boring. They are the same species as the little brown Crimini and the medium Portobellini. They lose flavor with size. My favorite is Morels and Calf Brains (if dirt is all cleaned out) but I haven't had any for years since the wild mushroom wars started and permits are required to pick them.

Each time we've gone to a local steakhouse we like, we always order a side of stuffed mushrooms (cheese). These are also sold at our local grocery store and sometimes we will get theirs. So good!

I had no idea. Thanks for that, Nancy.

I was out shopping today and picked up a 3 pak of portabellas...it was somewhere around $1.60 for the 3 pak. I saw a recipe where you bake them, brush with olive oil, grind on pepper, then add blue cheese & melt. I think I'll try that.

So he didn't even clean them with a damp mushroom brush. Huh.
