I love Asparagus and we have it often here at Assisted Living. I like to hold the thick end w!ith a thumb and finger and then bite into the speared end. So elegant. For varieity I will stab the thick end with my fork and eat at the speared end. I like my Asparagus covered with Garlic Butter.
I usually toss asparagus spears with a little olive oil, salt, and coarse ground pepper. Roast for about 20 minutes on a baking sheet @ 400°F. Eat it with a fork since I don't like greasy fingers.
Both Bobby and I enjoy fresh asparagus in the spring. I usually just steam it, and then we add salt and pepper, or whatever we want on it afterwards. Since I am on a low-salt diet for my heart, I mostly just eat mine plain.
Nearly every time I eat it steamed. I used to then toss it with butter, lemon juice and salt. I now toss it with a flavored butter I make (Ethiopian Clarified Butter.) My real favorite way to eat it is to batter & fry it, and serve with a jalapeno dipping sauce. But I can't eat that way very often. I've had it roasted or on the grill as Beth makes it, but only a handful of times. It just seems that the steamer is my go to method...and there are times I have asparagus 3-4 times a week. It's the only veggie I will only eat fresh...never canned or frozen.
My grandmother grew asparagus. It's an interesting plant. I ate it at her house at least once. And I've had it at a restaurant a couple of times. It's OK. The taste is fine. It always seemed overcooked. I like vegetables to put up some resistance. I may put fresh asparagus on my bucket list and give it another try.
Canned asparagus should be illegal. One year we visited Billings Montana; there was tons of wild asparagus growing in that area. First time I'd seen wild asparagus.
Do give it another try Nancy. You will not be sorry. Good asparagus will give you mild resistance. Try some kind of butter sauce on it.
there are a handful of veggies i refuse to eat. asparagus is one of them. i hate brussels sprouts. and okra grosses me out.
@Marci Miller Are you then non-vegan? Okra IS awful, admittedly, but asparagus and brussel sprouts are highly nutritional. Frank
I eat it in the morning I eat it every noon Sometimes I eat it when it’s mushy and can be eaten with a spoon I eat it when it’s free hee-hee-hee I eat it in a tree I eat it, with butter Straight from old Bossy’s udder I eat it walking down the street I eat it when I sleep I eat so much I think my rear is turning emerald green.
I don't hate it but my wife does, so I never eat it. She hates bananas too, but I love bananas, while I don't love asparagus, so I still eat bananas, but I never eat asparagus.
