That map seems strange. According to that, we have the 13 year cycle here, but I know that we have a deafening amount of cicadas each year, not just every 13 years. Maybe we get different ones each year ?
Every time they came out in northern Virginia (and they used to be thick) veterinarians would be overwhelmed by concerned owners. I believe that regional development and construction diminish their numbers, for obvious reasons.
Here's an interesting article. -Some cicadas are on an annual cycle, not a 13 or 17 year cycle. -There are "straggler" 13 and 17 year broods that emerge every year, while the masses are on the same cycle. Cicadas are not nationwide. I remember a coworker who transferred from California to our east coast office and said "John, the trees are singing to me." I can see how it would be a little "Outer Limits" if you're not from here.
Just heard my first cicada, there was one on the lower branch that we saw. Must be just one in the yard cuz it's quiet right now.
I don't believe I'd recognize a 17 year cicada if I heard one. There are so many tree frogs and other things that make a similar noise here they would drown them out. The peak night time noise starts in August. It's a reminder that summer is approaching it's end.
So all this talk of cicadas...and I go into the kitchen to make lunch, and I see this at eye level clinging to the outside of the screen, looking right at me: This is like being in a cheap horror movie.
Just wait until his million little friends come out and they're all over everything...and the creepy noise never ends.
Frogs have long been the stuff of scientific study because some species survive being frozen. The mechanism is being looked at as a way to preserve human organs longer for transplant. It's truly amazing stuff.
I have the CD the number one hits of the cicadas it has the famous hit buzz buzz buzz or was that the bumblebees?hahaha
Did y'all know the cicadas are edible? WRAL did a show about cooking them back when we had so many. One way that I remember them cooking them is by frying them.
that'll never happen here....although i remember asking my husband one time.. "what'll we do if the world runs outta food?" he said..."I guess we'll take a liking to bugs"
