I think it would have been simpler to just drop the title thing altogether. No "Mr., Ms, Mrs"... nothing. Why do women need to reveal their marital status when men do not? Just stupid.

I refer to all females as Ms now to get us on par with the males Mr. but great point Beth and it goes back to the guys wanting other guys to know their "women" were married and off-limits, but wives were not afforded the same courtesy. Many men don't like to be marked as taken

How confusing for young school kids to understand the difference in Miss Ms and Mrs. One of my neurologists always addresses me as Mrs. Maybe it helped him overcome the trauma of that initial visit when I had to do the walk in the nude.

In some cases like this I kinda go with the 'when in Rome theory'. Lifes too short to be offensive about unimportant trevial things,IMO.

It's getting too complicated these days, so I think I'll just quit talking to people.

LOL but you can't do that either, just watch who it is you talk to,numbers are smaller thats all. People are too sensitive and don't allow opposite opinions.Plus some things shouldn't be tolerated that are and things that should aren't in some cases.

    Agreed.

And it's interesting to me how this kind of status label evolved and persists through the ages also denoting social status from Lord and Lady, Master and Mistress, Sir and Ma'am, etc. We talk about it being a gesture of respect, but for what? On a more subtle level it's also a gesture of power position or lack thereof, and worth being examined.

Ms. doesn't reveal anything. What would your recommended equivalent of "Mister" be?

I heard they were gonna rename Big Sur and call it Big Ma'am, but then that other group got involved and now it's gonna be Big Questioning.

    Back on topic
I thought women were offended when being included in "you guys."
NOW women are offended by a gender-specific reference.
    I sense a theme...

Why does it need an equivalent? Just drop all of them.
