Is there actually an app called Stop Spam? I don't have any apps for that on my iPhone; I just use the "Silence Unknown Callers" function of my phone. (The calls still come in but the phone doesn't ring, so if it's a legit call they can leave a message.) There is also the Silence Junk Callers function that silences calls identified by Verizon as spam.
I have my cell set to block spam and scam calls and also a spam and scam ID on my landline. I get very few compared to before, but I never answer unless I know the number and feel in a mood to talk which is rare. I don't hear but in one ear at 50% and I can't talk clearly due to throat problems and whether dentures in or out, I am hard to understand. Most that know me just text or leave a message. I only have a landline because it is part of a package offered by my cable provider. Also it is great for emergencies. If a friend calls saying, "Faye pickup pickup please," then I will. One out of 10 times it is a true emergency and the other 9 are just friends being excited about something. If they cannot leave a message, then I cannot respond.
Likely not an app. That's why I hedged my bets with "...maybe it's a feature of my Verizon plan." Although when I looked this up on line, this Apple Support page said you can get an app to do that. I would not want to block someone based on my contacts list because doctors' offices have more than one number and I don't like missing calls regarding appointments, etc. Here's what Verizon has: I have the free one. Caller ID would be nice to have. I'm not sure it's worth $3/month. And I don't really care to have access to a Spam database...unless I'm missing the value.
@John Brunner - no was not the Do Not Call Registry. I have ado not remember now. Caller Id comes with our phones ,no extra charge. We have Metro PCS, now also T Mobile. A spam filter was added to our phones for free , work s great. Seldom does spam slip past the app.
Our cell phone is not easy to use out here but our landline works good but we do get spam sso need to check on some of these yall put up.
This may be getting off of my own thread here - But - for some time now I have noticed on the landline that in caller Id there will appear a name looks like it could be someone you might know. Such as Chares Abbott. Yet if you answer is a spam or robo call. I would think it illegal to use actual person name . So if you do answer the phone for whatever reason, turns out is Chase bank offering you a deal. Anyone else noticed that?
@Marie Mallery , I read somewhere long ago that was something else entirely. Would have to look it up.
I have gotten calls from myself from my phone number. When they spoof they apparently aren't too careful about details.
Since our phone is a listed number in the phonebook (archaic resource now) telemarketer calls were never ending until around 9pm. When technology advanced to the point of removing phone booths and phonebooks I thought that would stop them from calling ... but no,no, Nannette they became digital accessible online. I still use an answering machine to screen calls deleting until I get to one I needed to return. One greeting was a rap I made up and my mother cracked up laughing when she heard it and asked me what was I doing. I wish I had written it down, it was hilarious. Wait! I still have that micro tape, hahaha. So presently I have a phone that identifies the caller and I don't answer the phone to 'unavailabe', business numbers that I don't recognize and toll free numbers. I can block repeated numbers up to 30 which I can update. So I like my landline and I don't plan on getting rid of it. Technology is not infallible. I've seen too many movies that landlines have saved lives.
The only thing I've noticed is I think they sometimes spoof the phone number so it looks as though it is local. What's weird is that the area code for my cell is from the region I moved from. Virginia has 8 areas codes (too damn many humans here), and nearly all the robo calls I get are not the area code of my cell, but the area code where I live. I don't have Caller ID, so don't know if they could spoof that.
I am with you, Von. I have a very expensive land line in that it can only make local calls and has no frills, only an answering machine. It is still listed but has no caller ID. I screen calls with the answering machine and don't answer the phone till I hear someone worth talking to. It is basically for apocolyptic emergencies. I have a cell phone through Tracfone. It cost $4 and I get a year's worth of minutes for $112 because I don't play on it or surf. It is in case of emergencies non-apocolyptic. I use my laptop for computer stuff. I don't feel the need to be plugged into a phone incessantly.
