The weather forecast this morning mentioned the possibility of being able to see Aurora Borealis in the whole of Sweden today. One problem though, it's completely cloudy. No problems with computers or power. Maybe this will be another non-event like Y2K and the millennium bug when airplanes were going to fall out of the sky, elevators would get stuck and all computers would crash. What happened - nothing.
Exactly Bibbi! A big nothing concern based on how the ionosphere fails to reflect HF radio signals during these solar storms. Nothing of importance depends on HF radio these days. Too bad it is cloudy in Sweden because you have a good location provided you can get away from lights. We had the perfect morning but I am just above sea level and didn't have a ride to the mountain top 50 miles away. I saw the lights from that location in 2015. I think the 2015 event has this 2021 event a disappointment for the many Oregon photographers that are out this morning. Here are some photos by professionals from 2015 taken in Oregon. This is a masterpiece and my favorite Northern Lights photo ever. What I am seeing this morning is similar but not as much purple or red and no green tones, just blue with white vertical streaks and much less defined with no clouds. Another 2015 masterpiece.
It’s 9 am Sunday morning the day after what was going to be a day of possible problems with power outages and computers crashing. Results so far: power outages zero, crashed computers zero. Views of Aurora Borealis zero, but that last point could be due to the compact cloud cover. How were you affected?
Beautiful skies! I seem to have a childhood memory of seeing the Northern Lights. It could be true, since we lived in Michigan then, but it might not be, since I have a lot of early memories that have since been debunked.
No problems here at all. No visible lights from my location this morning and skies are again clear and it is cold.
We are experiencing very high solar winds at the moment and should be hit by a glancing blow from a CME in the next three days. The temperature of the solar wind seems to be vey high, but not to worry as the climate guys say the Sun has nothing to do with the climate.
been watching this solar event....hopefully they are right about the stronger ones not happening until 2023
Thanks for the update. I never know anymore since I gave up shortwave radio and the old guy moved that contracted with NASA and had an amazing setup that recorded the sun and NASA could watch online live or via video. I used to enjoy walking by since he always invited me to watch it live. This explains why when I stopped by to visit amateur radio field day this last weekend that 12 meters was real strong.
I don't think they quite know what is happening with the Sun at the moment. It hasn't been behaving like usual for this point in the solar cycle, so it has some concerned. It is probably Trump's fault and there should be another investigation. The strong solar wind concurrent with a solar flare/CME seems unusual.
If I remember correctly, Kim Jon Il sent N. Korean astronauts to explore the sun or so he said according to a report. Now, that had to happen before Trump took office. Even if it did happen after Trump took office, he knew that he couldn’t order people to go to the sun unless of course, it was at night time when it is cooler. That said though, we do not traditionally send rockets into space at night. So, it just had to be N. Korea’s fault.
Now now…….that was Kin Jong Un. Un’s daddy sent guys to the sun. The same guy who never played golf and his first time out on the links aced all 18 holes. Hmmmm…..golf and Trump. Maybe there IS a connection.
Two simultaneous solar flares have erupted from the earth-facing side of the sun. NASA and NOAA have not issued statements that I have seen, but here is a Forbes article on the issue. Much of the southern Pacific area experienced a radio blackout, but the rest of the stuff won't get here until Sunday night Monday morning, so we'll see what happens. The government will not disseminate information f they believe it will start a panic.
