I never had any reaction to aspirin, either. I read somewhere years ago that taking a low-dose aspirin has been shown to reduce the chances of colon cancer and that's when I started taking it. My father died of colon cancer, or so we thought. We found out later it was actually melanoma that had metastasized to his colon.
My mother took aspirin and Tylenol for pain and burned a hole in her stomach which required surgery. She was passing blood from both ends and passed out from the loss of it. If someone wasn’t in the house to hear her hit the floor, it was all over.
Thanks, Don. I got a call back from my doctor's office for me to call them, but it went to voice mail and they're closed. I'm not sure what my GP is gonna say because it was the cardiologist who recommended this. No one has any solid basis for making a recommendation one way or another other than their exposure. The risk is mine to take. An alternative that I've read is to continue to take an acid reducer, which cleared up the issues. If stopping aspirin does not fix things, I'll get another endoscopy.
I'm still not certain that aspirin has caused my stomach upset. I took my last aspirin Friday AM and my last acid reducer Thursday PM and so far my stomach's been fine.
Be cautious taking acid reducers for long periods of time. I think the FDA approval is for only 6 months or something like that, but long-term use has been linked to SIBO and several kinds of kidney cancer. My wife took them for a decade and things got completely out of control for her. Her digestive system still hasn't recovered and she has been off them for several years now.
Thanks for that, Don. I just took them for about 60 days waiting to get in to see the gastro guy. I'm upset that when the gastro guy did my endoscopy 3 years ago he did it when I was on reducers, so the benefit was marginal. I should have said something then. The issues I was having went away immediately after the CT's barium drink and the colonoscopy's cleansing (I swear it was a bacterial problem), and just started returning pretty near the 3rd anniversary of those procedures. That stinks that your wife's system got out of balance like that. I tried to have a conversation with the gastro guy about the timing of my relief and about his putting me on probiotics, but as I've whined before here, I can't find many doctors who will converse with a patient rather than issue edicts and kick you out the door. Our systems are resilient in many ways, but it seems there are some areas that are tough to bring back to normal once significantly disrupted.
She is completely off the PPIs and found that her diet was largely to blame for her symptoms. I have told her story here before, but I am certainly glad I put my foot down and made her address her issues with a different medical practitioner.
