Life without a vehicle? Never. We have an SUV and a truck and I don't see how we could get buy without them. I did buy a smaller truck and have the other one for sale, but couldn't think of not having one.
I don't have a car and haven't had a car for many years. We had two cars that were paid for and then my husband totalled both of them years ago. We can't afford two cars now. I don't really go anywhere and my huband needs the car for work amd he has three jobs. All of them require him to have the car. Two are part time. If I do want the car I have to get up at 4:30 am and be back to pick him up at 1:30 in the afternoon. If he has to work his Crisis Team, I can't have a car, even if he is home because he is on call and he may have to go out at any time during his shift, which is every single Friday evening fro 4:00 pm until 9:00 am Satuday Morning. The other part time is a relif worker at the local Childrens Home and he has to have the car to do that. Living without a car can get hairy, if I want to do something. I have learned to live without a car. btw, we live 30 minutes, drive, from anything.
I've never had a car and never needed to. I've always lived in cities or towns with plenty of public transport. Even the small town that I live in now has a regular bus service and a railway station. It's just over half an hour to Edinburgh from where I live and the airport is only an hour away. If I want to go to London, for example, the train from Edinburgh only takes four hours or so and a flight about an hour. I've travelled a lot in Europe and most big towns and cities have plenty of public transport, usually cheaper than in the UK. Besides, it's quite fun to try out the metros and trams, etc. in other places.
We've had two vehicles since 2003. At that time, I drove one to work, which was downtown 28 miles away and she drove the other to her job that was 8 miles away. Don't know how we would have handled it, if we only had one vehicle and that was in the repair shop. When having two vehicles, if one had to be in the shop overnight, we used the other. When that happened, I'd have to take my wife to work and then head in to my job. Only thing is, I'd have to drop her off two hours before her start time, because I had to be at work at 7AM and she started at 8:30AM. And, yes, it cost us in insurance and gas..........just like it still does, but much cheaper because I'm the one retired. We also have to have a "pulling" type vehicle for our powerboat. However, before we move, we are going to sell the old (1997) Dodge RAM 1500. I don't want to make this reply a long one, so will continue in my next reply on how I survived with only a motorcycle/Kawasaki 650 for a year.
If I could afford it, I'd like to have a third vehicle -- a pickup truck with 4-wheel drive and enough power to push a plow. I don't want to replace my Tracker because my wife and I often drive long distances separately, and I don't want to be stuck with something that's too hard on gas.
Ok, bought the Kawasaki and rode it, and had only it, for a year. Bought rain gear to wear and did have to wear it. Went grocery shopping......how? Held down a Copier Paper box (w/lid) to the rear of the seat using two bungee cords. Put the groceries, in plastic bags, in the box, put lid on and "bungeed" it down. Rode the bike home and that was it. When it rained, would have an umbrella and walk to the store and home. There is an old saying, "where there is a will, there is a way". Rode that Kawasaki everywhere and thru some pretty hefty downpours. After meeting my wife, took her to work on it once. A co-worker seen her and said, "what's up there motorcycle mama". Wife laughed. Ended up selling it.
Ken, that's what we had while living in Colorado/south of Denver and still have. A Durango and the Dodge RAM 1500, both 4-wheel drive and was that 4-wheel drive handy driving in deep snow.
Me thinks @Denise Happyfeet forgot about her thread here... ... although I guess she's now primping for her hot date
She's past the primping part, @Bonnie Thomas. Expecting to hear something soon. They did Walmart already I'm sure and hope lunch is over or almost over. If she doesn't come online things must be going well. I hope.
LOL, that could work for me too Chrissy, but they are way more costly than gasoline. Well, not as costly as parts though
I found it again Bonnie, I'm getting the hang of how to set my "views" of the "recent thread posts" so I can keep up. @Chrissy Page came to my rescue. Now I am able to see who all is busy posting, no matter where on the forum!! I click my little bookmark icon in my toolbar, and there I am, at recent posts yeehaw!! PS the date was kind of "lukewarm" on the scale, lol
