At 74 I finally made pancakes today. Bisquik, milk, eggs. Simple tasted a little gritty but OK. Put it mildly they were not my mom's pancakes!!

Amazing that you have made it to 74 and had never made pancakes. I probably made my first ones at age 10 or so.

You never went camping or spent time around a fire? You missed a good part of life, @Al Amoling . Some of the highlights of my life were the times spent in the woods and wilderness with our family and the hikes and campouts with Boy Scouts when it was an organization.... Sorry you missed those times.

My Boy Scout troop had a cabin in the woods and the scout master did all the cooking. I guess we were spoiled....I grew up in the city so the country was some place that I wanted to live when I got older.

Does making pancakes from a mix count? I'm a whiz bang expert at that. :)

I've made my share of Aunt Jemima's. I love them with blueberries stirred in. They always gotta have over-easy eggs on top...and butter...and real maple syrup...and sausage on the side.

The best thing is you can make a big batch, freeze them, and they come out of the microwave just as though they were fresh off the griddle.

Congrats on a new first, Steven!

I assume that ANY pancakes would count. Want a challenge? Try grinding your own grain and making yeast-raised or sourdough pancakes over an open fire....

Have you done that? I have some hard red winter wheat berries but have not done anything with them. I don't have a grinder, except for whatever smashing tools there may be in the garage.

We have to grind the stuff before we go out, but we grind our flour whenever we make pancakes these days. It has been a while since we made sourdough or yeast-raised pancakes. We used to do it fairly often when the kids were at home. Now we grind buckwheat to make the pancakes, but we use baking powder, as it is quicker. Wife cannot eat wheat, but she can eat buckwheat since it is not a grain. We have one of these and attach it to our Kitchen Aid. We do have the hand-powered stuff as well, but the mixer is quicker. Should we go to a cabin, we can use the hand grinder attachment.

So how has that attachment held up?

I've looked at those. I have the meat grinder attachment (I believe Kitchen Aid calls it their Food Grinder Attachment)...it makes the best burgers! I've procrastinated on getting a grain grinder, not deciding between the convenience of electric and the SHTF reliability of manual...so I've done nothing.

One of these days I gotta make at least one loaf of bread from fresh-ground wheat.

Ours works either manually or with the mixer. We've used it both ways, and it seems to work fine either way. I think when she wants more control or has some special uses, she does it manually, but usually we use the mixer. Give it a try @John Brunner!

I learned how to make pancakes from scratch from my mother. I made them like that until I discovered the ready mixed. I have tried a variety of pancakes at restaurants but prefer plain with lots of butter and syrup.

Of course it do. My roommate has had EGGO pancakes, every morning, fresh from the freezer, for the past two years.
