My son married the girl he was dating in high school and they are still together, with two grown sons and some grandchildren.

Only reason to get married, as I see it, is to have kids. These days, that's not the way it's done, by the super rich in the public eye. Sets a very bad examples for those who will never be able to afford to live that lifestyle.

Marriage is a good thing for some of us. I don't like to date a lot or to be alone for a long time. Some people do and that is fine too.

Janet and I have been living together for seventeen years.

Marriage Certificate? I don't need no stinkin' Marriage Certificate! (For you fans of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.")

I'll have to sniff mine and see if it smells. I hope not. Getting married was a family tradition in our family.:D

In Texas you actually don't need a "marriage certificate." Just represent yourselves as married and voila'... common law.

    Damn.

There are only a handful of common law marriage states left:

    • Colorado: Common law marriage contracted on or after Sept. 1, 2006, is valid if, at the time the marriage was entered into, both parties are 18 years or older, and the marriage is not prohibited by other law (Colo. Stat. §14-2-109.5)
    • Iowa: Common law marriage for purposes of the Support of Dependents Chapter (Iowa Code §252A.3) Otherwise it is not explicitly prohibited (Iowa Code §595.1A)
    • Kansas: Common law marriage will be recognized if the parties are 18 or older and for purposes of the Divorce and Maintenance Article, proof of common law marriage is allowed as evidence of marriage of the parties (Kan. Stat. §23-2502; Kan. Stat. §23-2714)
    • Montana: Not strictly prohibited, they are not invalidated by the Marriage Chapter (Mont. Stat. §40-1-403)
    • New Hampshire: Common Law Marriage: "persons cohabiting and acknowledging each other as husband and wife, and generally reputed to be such, for the period of 3 years, and until the decease of one of them, shall thereafter be deemed to have been legally married." (N.H. Stat. §457:39)
    • South Carolina: allows for marriages without a valid license (S.C. Stat. §20-1-360)
    • Texas: Common Law Marriage in specific circumstances (Tex. Family Law §1.101; Tex. Family Law §2.401-2.402)
    • Utah: Utah Stat. §30-1-4.5
But it's not all that cut & dry, according to this site:

Not all state statutes expressly allow for common law marriages. In Rhode Island, case law recognizes common law marriages. Oklahoma's statute requires couples to get a marriage license; however case law has upheld common law marriages in the state.

So many traps and so little time...

Don’t know about now, but whilst living in Georgia back in ‘70, the common law marriage was based on setting up a household for 24hrs.
I guess as long as ya had his and hers towels in the bathroom for a day or so, ya’ll be’s married.

My, how the times have changed, huh? Of course, "setting up household" has different connotations than just "staying the night." One had better hope that one gets the right judge...if any existed there at that time.

I was just thinking about my last post and it came to me that maybe if the couple got t-shirts that said, I’m with her and I’m with him on them, maybe it could be construed as being married.
But then, if that would do it then, I’m with her, I’m with her or I’m with him and I’m with him would do it as well.

But wait! To be PC, we have 70+ new pronouns that the woke mob recognizes so, I’m with he/she/her/them and I’m with her/he/ shim might have to be substituted for the genderless society in order to be married.

Edit: My brain is going stupid this morning. A woke marriage is like having 2 pairs of white socks whereby if they are switched you could say you have 4 pairs.
A woke marriage might have a vi,him/her with a xi,her, him so technically you’d have 6 people in the same bed instead of 2. Kinky!

They've been working on us for a very long time, it would seem.
