There is going to be a total lunar eclipse tonight. Totality starts at 11:29PM EDT. The moon shall appear red for 85 minutes (or close to 1AM.) The moon may appear redder than in other eclipses because of volcanic ash still in the atmosphere from the recent Tonga eruption. My region has cloud cover and rain that's lasted from Friday and continues through all day Monday, with no anticipate break in the cloud cover. But I'm far enough away from strong ambient light to at least experience the darkness and the mood.
Weatherunderground calls for about 60% cloud cover at that time. Perhaps I'll get some clearing. I got my telescope ready.
I got confused and thought the eclipse started at 11:30 pm. It wouldn't have mattered anyway because it was cloudy up until about midnight. Does this little dot, in a sea of black, prove I really did see it? It sure would be easy to Photoshop. LOL At 12:20 am. This camera phone has a mind of its own. It didn't look this red to me in real life.
Nice shot, Nancy! The site I subscribe to said it would be redder-than-usual. It's the stuff of horror stories and Poe-esque mood setting. It was continuously overcast here. I went out and the night birds were acting a little odd, in my opinion That "starts at 11:30PM EDT" was my fault. I'm sure that's what my email said...I should have read more carefully. I've been outside and been so overwhelmed at the sight of the moon I've thought "I gotta get a picture of that!" But it never comes out like the experts can make it:
