I don't think that you necessarily have to progress from the bottom to the top. They are all goals worth chasing in any order.
The foundational physiological needs are a given in that no one can exist without them with the possible exception of reproduction. But then again, without reproduction mankind would not exist anyway so we gotta leave that one in the foundation. But yeah, I can see the other tiers as interchangeable to some degree. I still submit that self esteem (or pride) comes after accomplishment but perhaps it’s just a trivial matter at best.
I’ve always considered Maslow’s Hierarchy Chart to be fairly interesting and accurate in passing, although truthfully I never gave much thought to it since I’m not a psychology major. But now that you mention it, reproduction may be an inappropriate word to describe the basic need to gratify sexual urges, which can be linked to the need for intimacy in some people, and intimacy occurs at a higher level in the chart. I don’t think producing children is a basic need for the majority of people to progress to the higher levels.
As we all know, sex can be intimate and it can be otherwise. And there can be interactions that are way more intimate than anything physical. There are many ways to chase the needs that shall never satisfy. I think the term "naval gazing" came up elsewhere. If nothing else, we should be grateful we have navals at which to gaze and that we live in an era where we are afforded the time to do so. Mazlow's Hierarchy can be a reminder of that. I'm not discounting the benefit of assessing where one is in one's life, but more and more of us have the luxury of spending more time being philosophical. We should pause and give thanks.
