I read that Beth "Liked" what you posted. And, wife and I have been criticized right and left for not being open-minded to most everything. But, we don't have to be that way.
As I've mentioned repeatedly, I prefer living in a house, but I have rented plenty of apartments before, especially while I was living in California. In no case did I read the rental agreement, but I probably adhered to most of the rules, whatever they were, because I try to be considerate to others. As far as I was concerned, I agreed to pay my rent and not to thrash the place. The rest had to do with putting trash in the right place at the right time, which wasn't hard to figure out, and neighbor-to-neighbor relations, which was between me and my neighbors. I was renting a place to live, not enlisting in the military or joining a cult, and I wasn't looking for a father figure to tell me what to do, when, and how. The only time I can think of where there may have been some problems with neighbors was when I rented a townhouse in Anaheim. California had just passed a law banning age discrimination in rentals and, prior to that, it was hard to find a good place to live if you were a single parent with a pre-teen boy. I could understand that, but I still needed a place to live. The townhouse that I rented had previously been open only to people who were fifty-five and older, and children were not welcome. The signs still said that but, armed with the knowledge that they couldn't discriminate against me for being in my 20s with a pre-teen son, I applied for a townhouse. The manager was well aware of the new law and didn't try to deny me a place, but my neighbors weren't happy. I could understand that but, still, it was around the corner from my church and only about ten blocks from where I worked, so I needed it. I'm sure that my son played his music too loud when I wasn't home sometimes, and I busted him charging something like seven pizzas to my Pizza Man account one night while I was at work, and I didn't have to hire an expert to figure out what that was all about. But, I tried to keep the bother down to a minimum, and this was made easier when a co-worker and friend of mine rented an apartment a couple of doors down from me. Since he worked a different shift than I did, and was married, they'd keep an eye on things while I was away. I don't think my son was exactly terrorizing the neighborhood since he was a pretty good kid, but I am equally sure that people who were used to having neighbors who were fifty-five years old or older weren't so happy about it. I'm pretty sure that Cody would not have been pleased. We ended up living there for about six years, and I paid the rent up for six months when I moved to Texas so that my son and his new wife could get a good start on their marriage. We live in a world with people who are of different ages, different backgrounds, different races, and different languages, and sometimes that requires a little bit of tolerance, using the original definition of the word, which meant to put up with. @Cody Fousnaugh, I don't think you're ever going to find a big city with a small-town atmosphere, and that seems to be what you're looking for.
IOW, Bobby, yes I'm unhappy because I'm a friendly person and the folks that live in this complex don't give a crap about being friendly. All I see here is a bunch of renegade kids who don't, and won't, follow Leasing Policy Rules. They pretty much do what they want. Sort of like someone who asks for, and gets, their discharge from a military service, and once out, finds out just how lacking discipline is at civilian jobs. So, what happens then, they re-enlist in the military.
I’m beginning to believe you are happiest when you have something to complain about Cody which is why you like apartment living and won’t consider living in a one family dwelling. An apartment complex is full of FREE people: It’s not a military barracks on a military post or base. Rules are going to be broken no matter where you live. To be honest, even in the military we broke the rules nearly every day. Heck, the drunkest I have even been was at a poker game in the barracks. My heavens, you broke a rule the other day and complained that we and the apartment manager didn’t understand you. You went renegade. You grabbed onto your shears and butchered those poor defenseless Lilacs and I doubt if you even regret it that much. Pot calling the Kettle Black? Rules for thee but not for me.
Well, Bobby, I just love people who don't understand and don't want to understand a person's feelings. But, that's ok. I know you pretty well by now and should expect what you have to say. My wife is constantly asking me "why do you put up with this crap from some of these forum members? I wouldn't have a thing to do with the forum, because I know how I feel and some of these forum members are constantly putting you and I down for our feelings." Anyway, on to another thread. LOL
The manager did not make the rule. Comes from the corp office, or so we are to believe. And yes, they covered the basics, including guests. Called Clean Air Community

Update: Well, the two big lilac bushes in front of our patio are totally in bloom, with pretty heavy lilac smell. As in numerous cans of lilac spray have been sprayed! We haven't sent an e-mail to the complex manager yet, because it's been to cold outside to open the sliding glass door to the patio anytime during the day. We had a pretty big cold snap hit us last weekend and we were hopeful that the freezing temps would kill the blooms..........but, that sure didn't happen. Actually, each bush got pretty covered in snow last Friday, but they are still "alive and well". Now, we warm up today to 75 and tomorrow to 84. Now, if we are unable to open the patio sliding glass door for some fresh air, due to the lilac bushes, I may contact the manager thru e-mail. Let her know just how much smell is coming from the bushes and that we can't open the door. If she doesn't want to do anything, we will just let it rest and put up with it. We don't want to contact Corporate and get her into trouble. Currently, we only have one year left here anyway. But, first I will see if I can use the grill tomorrow evening to make some burgers. We would turn on the A/C when it gets too hot inside, but some fresh air at times would be very, very nice. The A/C costs us, whereas opening the door doesn't.
So are mine, and I love it. My smaller (younger) lilacs are blooming for the first time this year, too.
OK, but just where are those lilacs located? I just walked out on our patio and WOW, smells like can after can of lilac spray. Pretty darn heavy odor. But, without a doubt, we know the manager won't do anything about the bushes, like we requested in our Lease Renewal. Just another reason to "get the heck out of Dodge" next year. Our complex manager in Jacksonville, Florida, took care of her residents and liked us. She should, we stayed at the complex for 10 1/2 years!
Alongside the house, but if I could grow them in front of my office window, I'd do that. I don't know of a flower that I enjoy the scent of more than lilacs.
Ok, but do you or Ken have asthma? My wife does and takes an OTC for it. It's not as serious of asthma as she use to have, but the heavy scent of lilac can get us sick. Neither you nor Ken know just how strong the smell is. And, right outside our living room on the patio. Open the sliding glass door to the patio and you really, really get hit with the smell. Some lilac smell can be fine, but this is a whole lot of smell.
