Long Island has great beaches, fishing, and lots of quaint villages to walk through and shop. It's fairly flat except on the North Shore Their are Cliffs. It has its share of museums, and theater. It's close to Manhattan were you have more museums and Broadway. It's a few hours away from the Catskill Mountains where you have winter sports.
I know she was born in the suburbs of London and was there during the bombings. She never really talked about hew life back home much. I get the feeling there was an amount of chaos...her mum passed away when she was young, father remarried, stuff like that. She had 4 siblings who have been to the states once to visit. My mother passed away in 2006 at age 82 (born in 1924.) I've not kept up with her brothers and sisters. There is a group in North America called the Trans Atlantic Brides and Parents Association (TBPA) that was created for all the English women who married Canadian and American soldiers and headed back across the pond. So I was often surrounded by native Brits. My favorite was a Cockney friend of hers. What a stitch! Pat pulled no punches. As a child in the late 50s/early 60s, I recall reading The Sun and The Mirror that her family would send over. Big, yellow pulp-paper things they were. America would not tolerate Tit Bits in our family periodicals.
Rodeo, as in bull riding or have I got it wrong? We can change our surname here just by common usage, for example I could start using my mothers maiden name without any legal issues, just pick a date when I start using it and then inform my bank, employer, NHS, etc, that from the chosen date my surname would be different.
I've been to London many times, it's very busy there at the min with the jubilee celebrations. I don't think I'd like to live there though, I like a quiet life and Lancashire has everything I want. I don't read newspapers to be honest, I have no interest in so called celebs and who they're dating.:-D
Yeh, but keep in mind, this was the early part of the last century...although everything is relative. Regarding changing legal names here: it's not all that difficult, although some jurisdictions require you to "show cause" and petition the courts for permission. But I believe that formal filing of the change is a universal requirement.
