@Nancy Hart You need not apologize, Nan! Nor is it very commendable of me to spoil a truly historic picture! Don't know what got into me.......... Frank
No need for YOU to apologize, Frank. I want my mistakes to be corrected. If nothing else, it means someone was paying attention.
It is hard to tell for sure, Nancy, but he might be mending it. It has been years and years since I watched Shane, so I do not remember what was actually happening. However, when the wire is too short because it somehow got broken, and you have to make it fit, then you can use whatever you have handy to mend the gap in between. If you look close at the center wire, it kind of looks like he has wound the end of the wire on that, and then did the same thing next to the fence post. Other than that, I have no guesses. It looks like he has lots of extra wire to use to mend fences, so not sure why he would not use that instead.
You must be right, Yvonne. It would take a lot of time to cut out short lengths of wire and attach them on both sides to the fence line. A temporary fix I bet. I wonder if there's not a way to also stretch the wire tight with a stick that way. I've been in that situation before, where a wire just split in two. That's why I was curious. Maybe some bad guys came through and cut the fence.
You can tighten the wire with a stick, but the stick would be perpendicular to the fence post when you do that . You can wrap both broken ends around the wood and then turn the stick clockwise until the wire is tight again. Unfortunately, the wood often breaks before the wire gets tight. It is better to use fencing pliers and then just twist the wire with that.
If I were to make something up, What about insulators so you could open and then re-close the fence? Not insulating against hot wire (electric) but against barbs of the barbed wire? When I have to make a quick mend, I make a loop and twist it, thread the fence end through, loop it and twist it to itself. Make a loop in the other end of the mend and twist the remaining fence into that end.
