Interesting. As you said, the engine will knock. As you know, the octane rating for diesel is very low...that's why compression ignites it. I don't know why folks would say this increases mileage.

When you say you wouldn't try it on newer vehicles, I assume you're talking about the risk of killing the catalytic converter. My 2019 Mazda adjusts timing on the fly, constantly keeping the engine on "the verge of knock." When I run high test, I get an additional 25hp at a certain RPM range. I wonder how the car would react to diesel.

The idea first came to my attention years ago on the old "Click and Clack" radio show if you ever heard it. A woman accidentally filled her tank with diesel, but when the attendant noticed it, he told her to have her vehicle towed to a garage and have her tank pumped and refilled before she drove it. She had that done and noticed a subsequent dramatic increase in mileage. She called the show to ask about that. They told her that a small amount of diesel would increase mileage if it did not affect performance. They recommended adding between a cup and a pint of diesel to a tank and see what happened. A lot of other things have confirmed the view, but I have not actually tried it. My thought about newer cars was not so much the converter as the computer settings, but it might cause the converter to get too hot.

That makes zero sense to me, but I am not a mechanic by any stretch. A quick web search finds nothing about amending the gas with diesel, just trying a 100% swap of diesel for gas.

Gas last fill up was $4.99 here. But we keep the tank full in case things get interesting.

It is coming down here. They have temporarily repealed the gas tax. It was
    $3.89 a gallon today.

Emission parts would cost more than the gas if you contaminate the sensors etc. 02 sensors do not like foreign substances, fuel air ratios are all algorithms computed by all the important sensors. Mileage would probably be a lot worse since the fuel management has no idea of what to heck is going on ! ;0)

New vehicle prices are way up. Used vehicles even more so. Auto parts shortages are common everywhere. Gas prices vary about 19 cents per gallon if you shop.

Got my new Texas Gas bill. I'm on the monthly budget plan. I have been paying $42/mo. for a few years, now, and always thought that was absurd. We don't use much natural gas. Well...... my new monthly bill just arrived .....$81/mo.!!!!!!

This is insanity! The Middle Class Is being wiped out, by degrees.

While I'm not a conspiracist, I am now seeing a pattern: Soften up the citizenry with a grossly overstated danger from a "new" pathogen, see how high they'll jump when you give the command, start raising prices on everything after giving the ignorant a new minimum wage that makes those folks feel like they're getting ahead while the wealthy class makes sure that never happens because it keeps raising rates on everything at a rapidly accelerating pace, crush anyone, eventually, who's not in the multi millionaire/billionaire club!

I see very bad times coming for the US, and other countries.

    It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall!

    BELIEVE IT!

Hmmm. I need to go look at our natural gas bill. It's typically around $27 a month for gas water heater and stove; in winter it peaks around $75/mo to include running the furnace for the month. Our electricity is on balanced billing; it's $221 a month year round but will likely jump this year.

I don't know what our monthly costs are. My wife pays the bills and she exaggerates the amounts because, in her mind, whatever amount is owed is the monthly costs, so if she gets a month behind on the bill, she thinks the costs have doubled. We did once have a monthly plan for heating oil but I think we're just paying to fill the tank whenever it gets low now. That's expensive but a full tank will last a long time, especially when it's not winter.

Leading up to the election season, the Illinois State Legislature has decided to delay a hike in gas taxes for 6 months. In order to maximize the political benefit, the legislation requires gas stations to post this notice at their own expense:

As of July 1, 2022, the State of Illinois has suspended the inflation adjustment to the motor fuel tax through December 31, 2022. The price on this pump should reflect the suspension of the tax increase.

Failure to do post this notice will result in a $500 Per Day fine. That's $15,000 per month, or about $90,000 for the entire 6 month period should a gas station not purchase and display the signage.

The Illinois Fuel and Retail Association (IFRA) is fighting this in court. Should they lose and the state prevail, the association is providing gas stations with the following sign, which includes the required notice:

So, Biden is not only blaming Russia and the refining companies for the high prices but the fueling station owners as well.
I know the owner of a BP and also know the owner of a Sunoco station and neither one makes more than 2 cents a gallon so Biden again is lying to the public.

That all said, Biden is going to forgo the fed tax on gas which is around 13 cents a gallon and that should enable the public to buy….uh….dunno.
Ten gallons would save us $1.30 and that won’t buy much even from the Dollar General because they went up to $1.50.

The other thing is that the tax vacation will last for 90 days and will end in September.
It’s going to end 2 months before the mid-term elections?
